The original purpose of Segwit is not scaling of Bitcoin. It's solving malleability issue which is a possible security hole when doing a chain transactions. Some degree of scaling is welcomed consequence of SegWit, not it's purpose. Solving of the malleability is however (or at least should be) a prerequisite for any future interventions, including scaling. One could find a world of problems with SegWit that have to do with it being very complex intervention that very much changes block structure. But scaling is not a good objection. However it is worth noting that main opposition to SegWit comes from a gu/company who has issues with SegWit making his favorite mining cheat (AsicBoost) unusable. AsicBoosters often mine empty blocks... how is that good for Bitcoin? SegWit is in my opinion a way forward.
