Guide: All-New TREZOR Model T Cryptocurrency Wallet

in #bitcoin7 years ago

This review and guide will cover Satoshi Labs's all-new Trezor Model T hardware wallet. There are many types of cryptocurrency wallets, ranging from those found on mobile phones, desktop computers, and the internet. However, it's well-known that the absolute most secure type is a hardware wallet, and Trezor is one of the most trusted manufacturers of these.

Trezor's all-new Model T cryptocurrency wallet includes features ranging from a vivid touchscreen, strengthened security, support for many coins, and support for the futuristic USB-C connector. Let's dive in!

Large and Vivid Touchscreen

The main selling point of the Model T is its large and vivid touchscreen. Satoshi Labs was able to implement a convenient and useful touchscreen while still providing even more security benefits for the user.

Trezor's touchscreen allows you to operate with the wallet interface without pressing clunky buttons. For example, you can enter in your PIN code through the touchscreen itself. You can also view coin balances and do much more straight from the hardware.

The Satoshi Labs team also rewrote the code from the ground up with the same security principles in order to accommodate for the all-new touchscreen.

Innovative Security

Trezor T has improved security compared to previous wallets, as all pin entry is done directly on the hardware device itself.

However, I have found that it's easier for people to physically see your PIN if you type it on a touchscreen, so make sure to cover up your Trezor while typing or ensure that no eyes are behind you.

Another thing to notice is that Trezor automatically changes the order of the numbers when you're typing in your PIN, forcing you to really look and figure out what you're pressing.

The purpose of this is to make sure your fingerprints (finger oils) don't touch the same places on your Trezor over and over again, as this might help a hacker figure out your PIN. It's clear that Satoshi Labs has thought of almost everything.

When you first plug in your Trezor into your computer, Model T starts drawing power from your computer and doesn't transfer any data at all. Only when you enter your PIN does Trezor begin communicating with your computer. This leaves nothing to chance and provides optimal security for your wallet.

Built-In Forgiveness

As usual, Trezor has built-in methods to recover your cryptocurrency in case you lose your Trezor. When you first setup Trezor T, you'll be asked to write down a 12-word recovery phrase on a secure pad of paper provided in the box.

You should safeguard this recovery sheet somewhere extremely secure, and should you lose your Trezor, you can easily use the sheet to get back into your account and recover all of your cryptocurrency.

Conclusions

The Trezor Model T is an exemplary cryptocurrency wallet for security, simplicity, and peace of mind. It's a bit expensive right now at €139 ($162) excluding shipping, though prices will rise soon to €149 ($174), but if you have the money (possibly from gains made off trading crypto!) I highly recommend looking into it.

Just got my Trezor set-up -- pretty impressed! I think this will make keeping track of my crypto much easier (and no failed hard drives).

Awesome! Seems like a good time to finally get myself a HW wallet.

I want to eventually get a hardware wallet such as this, but I am hoping prices come down just a tad more. I don't feel like I have enough crypto to invest in something like this yet.

Do you think ledger is good too?

Thanks for the info. I've been waiting to check out the new model. Is this model better than the competition or previous Trezor models?

How to use this wallet

I honestly feel hardware wallets are expensive for the time. People who own a lot of coins for them it is easier to buy one and store.

But a lot of people have little holding of coins, so they would want a cheaper variant which would cost not more than 15usd.

That will be the point when the sales of hardware wallet rises.

Nice! I hope it's more secure than their older models. Might have to get me one :P
