Most coins are based on another coin, incorporate improvements from other coins, and try make the whole better.
As a coin developer, I can name base coin I used, coins I borrowed improvements from and how I made the whole better...

Basically the only thing that matters then is the community and integrations. If those are big, the coin can become whatever it needs to be.
