ATM are higher is the US because we still use Cash too much. A colleague told me the story of his recent visit to China were he tried to pay for food with cash or a credit card and they look at him as if they had never seen it before as almost all retail transactions there outside tourist areas are done with QR codes and wallets. They are still linked to centralized institutions but the concept exists and has been adopted very quickly. Comes to show how banks are defending their way of doing things here in the US.
