The machines were stolen from a number of data centres in Iceland, which is a hub for cryptocurrency mining. Crytocurrency – such as Bitcoin – is created by connecting incredibly powerful computers to a global network and solving complex mathematical equations.
Cops have been monitoring energy use in the country and asking electricians and power companies to report any unusual surges in a bid to track down the stolen machines. And the cost of the thefts – the biggest in Iceland’s history – is huge, with police estimating they are worth almost $2 million (£1.44 million).
I have heard many times about the theft of data and bitcoin online but never heard about the robbery of machines used to mine bitcoin. Now the two types of threat are available for crypto world – hackers and robbers. Hackers will steal important data and virtual coin via internet while robbers will show their physical efficiency to steal crypto mining machines.
