I do not think cryptocurrencies as a concept is very different from an economy based on the value of gold (a metal with little or no practical use) and the activity within an economy (the more activity the greater the value). The important difference is the decentralization but we may have an Animal Farm situation, with old patterns repeating, just with new names and faces.
The concern for me is with corporate, then governments all wanting their own blockchain technology, a few good systems should be developed first in an open market system.
