Fatal Stabbing of Cybersecurity Blogger in Japan

a man has just been arrested in Fukuoka, Japan in connection to the fatal stabbing of Kenichiro Okamoto, an IT security expert and blogger.

Okamoto had an expertise in matters of cybercrime, including the dealings of malicious actors on the dark web.

The Fukuoka police department released this information on June 25.

Online trolls, threats and intimidation have escalated in recent times.

It has reached a point where researchers and experts are being threatened because of the insight they have gained on crime and darknet activity.

Okamoto, 41, was a cybersecurity expert working for an IT security firm in Tokyo. He also ran a prominent blog under the handle Hagex.

He had gone to Fukuoka, a popular holiday destination in northern Japan, to deliver a lecture about online safety at an old school building.

On June 24, police officers were called to a stabbing incident reported in the area.

They discovered Okamoto, who had suffered multiple deep stab wounds.

They rushed him to the hospital, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

In a turn of events, a middle-aged man visited the police station at 10 p.m. later that night and claimed that he was responsible for the murder.

When Hidemitsu Matsumoto, 42, turned himself in at the Higashi Police Station, he was found in possession of a bloody knife.

He was immediately taken into custody on suspicion of violating weapons possession laws and allegedly carrying out the murder of Okamoto.

Police have indicated that Matsumoto had bragged about the attack shortly before he turned himself in.

Japanese cybersecurity firms are known to be at the forefront of the fight against darknet crime. According to the IT firm in which Okamoto worked, he was an expert in matters cybersecurity and the dark web.

He also had a personal blog on which he published issues to do with the dark web.

Apparently, Okamoto had gotten on the bad side of unnamed internet users, as a result of some of the content he put up on his blog.
