This will be unpopular but why I don't care if you lost money due to bitfinex hack

in #bitcoin8 years ago

Back when I first discovered btc a fair proportion of posts would be about btc taking on the banks, about btc being a alternative to corrupt bankers, about merchants excepting btc as a payment option, about people buying stuff with btc, about btc being a useable currency.
Unfortunately we allowed btc to be hijacked by traders on exchanges. Btc and crypto coins just became the new high risk, highly volatile stock exchange, a unregulated plaything of high risk investment bankers.
The attraction of easy money saw many people gamble with their coins on exchanges, If you had coins on bitfinex then you were gambling with them. How many times were you told that if your coins were on a exchange you didn't own them?
I only have a tiny amount of btc now, I SPENT it years ago believing that the way to drive btc to mainstream adoption was by using it, supporting merchants and services that had taken steps to add btc themselves. I had hoped for a new global currency in the hands of the people, not in the hands of the banks and bankers.
So , yup, if you lost a load of btc because it was sat on a big gambling website then unlucky, you lost and I don't care, in fact good, I'm not sorry for your loss, I'm quite happy about it.
