Returning from the gym, I opened my email to find my account was accessed during that time frame. I see that my Poloniex account was HACKED!
I immediately changed my password and enabled 2 Factor Authentication. (I admit I didn't set this up earlier).
(This isn't mine. I just found this picture online)
I made a mistake not setting up 2FA because quite frankly I've barely used Poloniex and I don't keep any currency in there at all. Still a bad mistake.
If you heaven't setup 2FA on your exchange accounts, please do so!
Regardless I'm using Bittrex now and I don't keep any currency in there. I trade my SBD for BTC or ETH and move it out right away.
Side note, you would think that this community in Bitcoin would be like-minded and good hearted people. Apparently not.
Looks fishy!
Anyone else get hacked on Poloniex or another exchange?
I have not been hacked yet, but that is one of my biggest concerns. @themoneygps do you have any recommendations on good wallets to keep your cryptocurrency in?
Armory is probably the most secure. You can store offline with it. That's what i use. .......... until my ledger nano s arrives. Backordered 2 months. Trezor is backordered too but not as bad.
If you don't want a hardware wallet then definitely get armory
Hi i learning this new technology too, so i heard that paper wallets are the best.
There are hardware wallets that are available. Such as Trezor. (Trezor is sending me one soon and I will review it and post it here on Steemit). That's the most secure because it's a device designed to protect your digital currency.
As for something free, you can get Blockchain.info. It's an app. Pretty secure. Most importantly, keep the currency off of any exchange.
I have always heard to keep it off of the exchanges, it makes sense to me, so that is what I have always done. I just always wonder how safe some of the free online wallets really are, and if I should just pay for the "security" of a hardware wallet. But, then I think those must be fallible at some point too.
Essentially if you keep your private keys, then you should be good. It's the services where they keep the keys that may be unsafe.

I saw a bittrex that was hacked,
watch?v=eZRPDrlUggY
had 2fa and a 30character pass. Though he was account sharing and his partner may have done something to compromise the account (not confirmed last I checked)
Not yet,i was wondering if you know how to set up a paper wallet and who is trustworthy, can you do a video on the topic?
not hacked but still waiting for BTC to my wallet 15 days after receiving a transfer error and immediately issuing a support request!
I emailed poloniex to open a support ticket and still haven't heard back. I don't expect to.
I need to go check my 2FA immediately!
Definitely.
I haven't activated the damn 2fa so thanks for the reminder. Will do it now.
You must! Don't make the mistake I did!
I hope you didn't lose any money!
Thankfully I didn't. Not sure if they did anything to my account or just snooped around. Either way I will probably never use that account.
Glad you didn't lose any money. I don't keep any funds on exchanges. I just buy my monthly bitcoins and when they arrive I move them into cold storage. If you can't get a hardware wallet I recomend learning how to generate paper wallets.
I'm getting a Trezor. They're sending me one and I am reviewing it.
Will resteem to keep members aware. Thanks for the info.
Thank you for the resteem.
Hi dave, i follow a couple of guys (dabhoo7 and truthunveled777)just like you in youtube and they reported there is a cyberattacks al over the globe, so be careful.
Hopefully this stops! It's worrisome.
Information Security here, two factor authentication is critical! While it can be an inconvience to use a web service with 2fa, its nothing compared to having your account compromised.
Absolutely. I had set it up on other accounts I have but for some reason I guess I just forgot. Big mistake.
I use a Ledger offline wallet - you can't be too careful
I've never been hacked on an exchange I use a lot of security techniques.
