HairyCanaryCoin, the BitShares Charity Group and our first initiative: Donating to the victims of the wildfires in Greece.

in #bitshares6 years ago (edited)

Hello everyone,

Over the last few weeks, a few of us at BitShares have been discussing a charity group & fund and the best way to implement it.

Driven by the news of Monday's wildfires in Greece that claimed the lives of 81 people so far, injured countless others and burnt down more than 1500 homes, we decided to pick up the pace and make our efforts public in an attempt to gather donations for our first initiative to support the victims of this tragedy.

In order to get straight to the point, you can donate by buying the token HAIRYCANARYCOIN with BTS from the standing sell order placed in that market: https://wallet.bitshares.org/#/market/HAIRYCANARYCOIN_BTS

All BTS collected by Aug. 1st will be exchanged to Euros via EasyDEX and withdrawn to the special bank account (GR4601000230000002341195169) opened by the greek government for donations towards the victims. (http://int.ert.gr/bank-of-greece-bank-account-opens-in-support-of-fire-victims/)

Jacob Henderson of EasyDEX has agreed to waive the withdrawal fees for our charitable donations and stated he will also confirm the withdrawal of the funds to the above account so there's absolute transparency in donations

About the BitShares Charity Group.

The group consists of various BitShares community members and anyone who wants to help and suggest future initiatives can join us in telegram at: https://t.me/BitSharesPhilanthropy

A better understanding of our goals can be had by reading the following (quickly drafted) "manifesto" of sorts.

"Our Aim is to facilitate donations to charitable organizations in need, worldwide, in regards to three orientation catagories: those helping people, those helping animals, and those protecting and/or improving the enviornment within which the first two catagories live.

We Aim to make donating nearly effortless and quick, since a large portion of donations are of a spontaneous nature, which might evaporate in a very short amount of time. Thus, it is essential that at the very instant that a person feels inclined to make a donation she/he has immediate access to a mechanism to do so, i.e., within 10 seconds of the inclination arising. The BitShares DEX provides the ideal opportunity for this.

We Aim High."

Why "HAIRYCANARYCOIN"?

Hairy Canary is the handle of one of the BitShares trading community members. He is also the one that pushed us and inspired us to turn what was a token created as a joke into a force of change.

In his own words:

"Hairy Canary is Dr. Bruce J. Perry's parachute club jump name... retired professional geologist and analytical geochemist, taught at U Toronto during early 1990's , now living in Savona, BC, Canada with 3 dogs on a little organic mini-farm, and just into BitShares the past year or so... Harley's , Hot Yoga and Havin' a blast being retired, finally.

I was just the pretty face ( !! L.O.L. !!) about which the joke was made at the beginning of this adventure on CryptoConnie's show one evening... crank calls about a HairyCanaryCoin and somehow my crypto handle and my pic were put together with some foreign words I dont understand, so Alex went ahead and made the coin and I wrote back to connie and told her we at BitShares are taking this joke, a lemon, and makin it into lemonade!...like thats about the size of it...started out as a joke and we turned it around on the joker...don't have a clue who he was..."

Sort:

Congrats for rhe initiative but in general I am against donating to accounts related to the goverment. It has prooven in past that the money never ended up to the victims... Like the wildfires in Hlia in past for example. I prefer to help directly familys or victims without any middleman involved....

Not a fan either , but it's a trust issue. Personally I've already donated supplies/medicine/etc.

But for people outside Greece, if trying to expand the network of people donating, they need to be able to trust where the funds will end up. The greek government account is the only one I could find that they could "verify" in internet news articles etc.

Awesome ! Already donated some BTS. Everything counts...
