Bitcoin was the first crytpo-currency. Bitshares is a different crypto-currency, with different features. They are similar in that they are both crypto-currencies, but very different. Bitcoin has "miners" to verify transactions, where Bitshares is Delegated Proof of Stake (DPOS) and doesn't require mining.
