I've been led to believe that the silicon itself is not recycled, just the metals used on the board. Could be totally wrong about this though.

Yeah, I think you're right with believing this. It seems that silicon chips are very hard to recycle, or reuse :/ What brought all this more to my attention is that we recently ordered some more boards and the order had to be put on hold because there's been a worldwide chip shortage... I doubt there's a worldwide shortage of silicon yet, but there will be at some point.
So many things that are great about tech, but so much waste and an inbalance of resources too. Thinking Kobalt mines in DRC etc.. Apparently some of the first world electronic waste also just gets shipped off to third world countries where it goes to die. Crazy shit. Think there's heaps of research to be done in this regard
