Earlier this week, @steemitblog (the official blog of steem.com) announced a timeline for Smart Media Tokens, saying that it will officially go live on the Steem Blockchain beginning March 24th, 2019.

January 15, 2019 - SMT development complete and live on the TestNet. March 24, 2019 - SMT fully released and live on the Steem Blockchain.

Exploring Steem and SMTs

Steem is a social cryptocurrency earned through content creation, interaction, and engagement. Publishers can earn Steem by sharing work and curating the work of others across a broad range of apps - anything from blogging, to video, livestreaming, photography, music, code or even product reviews. Unlike the likes and hearts we know and love today, this social network is not owned by a single company. Instead, Steem is designed and owned by the people who use and earn it.

Smart Media Tokens are a token-launching protocol similar to ERC20s on Ethereum, but with all the state-of-the-properties enabled by the Steem blockchain, like three-second fee-less transfers. SMTs enable anyone to launch their own STEEM-like token with customizable features including Founders Tokens, Token Emission Rates, Proof-of-Brain, ICO Smart Contracts, and more.^Source
