The robotics and AI industry is gaining grounds as technological advancements are ever increasing. Due to advances in the production process building robots has become a bit more affordable nowadays; yet the prices of Humanoid robots, like Nao, Pepper or Asimo still range between 9,000 and 2,500,000 U.S. dollars apiece. To be able to grow the industry and reach a larger audience of consumers that can afford a companion, telepresence or humanoid robot, some changes have to be made. There is still a high level of isolation between big technologically innovative companies which is stalling the industry’s growth.
Kambria
Kambria aims to disrupt the Robotics and AI industry by creating an open innovation platform that allows for developers, manufacturers and companies to work together and grow the industry. Kambria implements a reward system to incentivize contributors to the platform with KAT tokens, which will become the native utility token fueling Kambria’s ecosystem.
Kambria has been initiated by parent company OhmniLabs that manufactured its successful telepresence robot called Ohmni. By using 3d printing technology and streamlining an iterative design, OhmniLabs offers an affordable telepresence robot to customers all over the world. While working on Ohmni, the team noticed they were researching technology that had already been researched, resulting in precious time that got waste. For them this was the main reason to start Kambria. By sharing thoughts, ideas, research, designs and incentivizing those that contribute to the Kambria platform, the industry can become much more efficient.
Looking at Kambria’s architectural structure, we can see that one of the four layers is the verticals. In this article I want to provide an in-depth overview of the possibilities that arise by utilizing Kambria within these verticals.
Verticals
Collaboration will be the key to further develop new innovations. Coming together with a large group of industry professionals can make a big difference. There are several sectors that can be disrupted. I want to highlight the following verticals that can all be influenced and improved upon by using Kambria’s open innovation platform.
AI and robotics: As the core business of Kambria’s parent company (OhmniLabs) is the development of smart robots, one obvious industry to disrupt is the AI and robotics industry. For instance, OhmniLabs will open-source its software and hardware components of Ohmni on the Kambria platform, so other developers can improve upon the technology. Kambria’s mission is to accelerate the robotics industry by enabling faster, easier and cheaper development and mainstream adoption.
Transportation: An estimated 1.2 million people worldwide are killed in vehicle accidents every year. This is a serious problem and during economic prosperous times the number of traffic fatalities tend to rise, due to the growth of motor vehicles on the roads. The transportation industry can benefit greatly from technological advancements, like: Urban Aerial Mobility, self-driving cars, drones and other innovations. It can solve the traffic congestion in urban cities and make transportation overall safer.
By collaborating with other researchers and developers on an open innovation platform like Kambria, the development of new solutions can be enhanced, ultimately leading to safer ways of transportation; hence saving lives.
Education: according to research reports, there will be a shortage of school teachers whitin a few years. Education is a basic need and children should get a solid primary education. AI and machine learning can help solve the work overload that teachers are experiencing nowadays. It is very conceivable that in the near future, certain tasks performed by a teacher can be done by a robot, assisting the teacher and alleviating some of the work. For instance, robots can be programmed to explain a particular topic in front of the class, whereas the teacher is more focused on providing one on one help, or answering specific questions. Not only would this be helpful for the teacher but I think it will also be a lot of fun for the students. In addition, AI can be used to develop algorithms that can greatly condense the information in textbooks. The result would be less redundant information, allowing students to only learn relevant information; hence learning much faster and more efficiently.
By developing the Kambria network, Kambria strives to create an environment where AI developers and educators can collaborate in ways that were previously impossible. Instead of the typical isolation of knowledge, Kambria allows for an ecosystem that facilitates cooperation and empowers users to learn and educate each other through opening up discussion on a global scale, propelling forward innovative ideas and new research.
Bio medicine and healthcare: with populations aging, there is an increasing need for healthcare professionals. Government and personal healthcare costs are skyrocketing and a solution to halt the increase in costs is needed. Although the demand for healthcare professionals is rising, technological advances in the healthcare industry have not kept pace. One of the major challenges that is typically faced by the bio medicine and healthcare industry is the possibility that their innovations will never be fully discovered or completed. For instance, a lack of resources can cause developers to never finish their brilliant discovery. Being a researcher myself, I know that a lot of discoveries never see actual day-light, due to a lack of funding or disappointing initial results. Kambria aims to provide developers the platform they need to complete their projects and bring their new technologies to the market, instead of abandon them too early.
Concluding remarks
Most people have heard of the saying sharing is caring and I feel this is also the case with Kambria. The team looks as if they are dedicated to grow the AI and robotics industry by working together and collaborating to share ideas. As mentioned before, being a researcher myself (in the field of posttraumatic stress disorder) I have worked on promising innovations in the past, that ultimately got abandoned due to a lack of funding. I feel that the platform, as envisioned in the Kambria project, can be a real game changer and help spur on the robotics and technology industry as a whole, by enabling faster, easier and cheaper development. The only way to achieve mainstream adoption is to get the technology into the hands of the consumer by collaborating with each other and by reducing production costs. Kambria is one of the few blockchain projects I expect a lot from and I will be keeping a close eye on this one.
