By now most people will have heard about Bitcoin and the blockchain. Although the technology is growing and getting more and more adopted by large companies, only a small percentage of the population actually understands the technology behind Bitcoin and the blockchain.

One space in which blockchain technology can thrive is the content industry. however, at this moment, many content creators and providers encounter barriers to enter this new and upcoming technology. For instance, a lack of technical understanding and steep development costs has resulted in millions of content providers who are missing out on the benefits offered by blockchain technology to enhance user experience.

To solve the abovementioned problems, the BORA project has created BORA Island, which is a decentralized content platform that allows content providers to connect to the blockchain.

The BORA project explained

BORA strives to be a decentralized platform that facilitates content providers by making it easier to connect to the blockchain ecosystem. This platform will be called BORA Island and will consist of various toolkits that provide developers and content providers with extra resources and more control over their own content. For instance, these toolkits could facilitate the interconnection of blockchains and content services, possession and transfer of digital assets, and storage and sharing of data which requires trust.
The launch of BORA Island’s mainnet is scheduled to be launched around the second quarter of 2019. However, earlier this week the team has released BORA Lagoon (BORA’s testnet).

BORA Lagoon

The BORA Lagoon is the result of months of research and development and can be regarded as a testnet for the BORA Island platform (more on that later). BORA Lagoon allows developers to verify and test their content and collaborate with the BORA team to improve the BORA project. BORA Lagoon will function as a communication layer for developers as the team continues to develop the BORA Island platform.

BORA Lagoon consists of the following features:

  • BORA Test Ground: This is the place where developers can test the functionality of: token transactions, wallet management and exchange of tokens to be used in the BORA Island ecosystem.
  • BORA Explorer: The explorer allows one to view the transaction information that is recorded in the BORA chain during the development and testing phase.
  • BORA Toolkit: This is where developers/content providers can find the platform interoperability-related REST APIs that can be used for testing purposes.

BORA Island
As mention before, the eventual platform (mainnet) will be called BORA Island (Mainnet) and it is set to launch in the second quarter of 2019. BORA Island can be considered as a Scalable High-Performance platform that adopts a side chain connected through the Ethereum network. The BORA Island platform includes the following features:

• Scalability: BORA island adopts a modular structure that can add side chains to facilitate the diverse needs of content providers.
• High Performance: By utilizing a Proof-of-Authority (PoA) consensus algorithm and enhancing linear performance by adding side-chain nodes, BORA Island is capable of reaching 2,200 transactions-per-second (TPS).
• Isolation: By minimizing inter-content interference, thanks to the modular architecture, BORA Island is able to ensure an independent service environment.
• Accessibility: BORA Island provides a development environment that matches the needs of content providers, ranging from a simple connectivity to the platform, to the implementation of smart contract-based Dapps.
• Variety: By adopting a two-layered chain and implementing a token structure, the problems related to commission and performance can be solved by combining with a large range of various digital content, such as: games, entertainment, and health information.

The BORA Token
BORA’s ecosystem consists of two tokens, namely the BORA token and the BORA Swell token. BORA tokens are ERC20-based tokens and can be used to trade with other users within the ecosystem or externally. BORA Swell, on the other hand, is only meant for internal use within the BORA ecosystem. For instance, users that wish to play games through a dApp on the BORA Island platform or want to buy in-game items can do so using BORA Swell tokens.

Concluding remarks
In my previous article about BORA I mentioned that there was not a lot of information available. Perhaps one of the reasons information at that point was concise, is that the team was hard at work making sure that the BORA Lagoon testnet would be launched as scheduled. After playing around with the testnet, everything seems to be working as they claim, which stems me positive regarding the launch of the BORA Island mainnet during Q2 of 2019. The BORA project is an interesting project and definitely one to keep my eye on for the upcoming months. I am looking forward to new updates from the team; and I will be posting new articles on the project in the near future, as more information surfaces.
