While the real economy refers to economic activities such as the production and sale of physical products, the virtual economy has to do with the exchange of virtual goods. A good example of the virtual economy is internet games, players spend countless hours and resources amassing in-game items. These days players are now able to buy virtual in-game items with real cash and also exchange virtual in-game items for real cash. The widespread interest and usage of social networks, video games, messaging services has resulted in an explosive growth of the virtual economy, currently, the virtual economy is worth billions of dollars. The virtual economy industry has a huge potential which is left to be tapped.
Current Problems
For any economy to thrive, there is need for collaboration between the different industry players and interoperability of data. Sadly, this has not been the case with digital platforms, instead, the virtual economy marketplace is fragmented. The digital platforms that make up this economy operate in a closed off ecosystem and the brands are siloed with little to no accessibility.
