TERAWATT-CURBING THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION THROUGH THE USE OF LEDs

INTRODUCTION

Groping in the dark or staying in the dark is something that I believe most people don’t like to do and this is because, the potential of you kicking your foot against something or falling is very high. Not only that but also how would you feel when you have to search for something in the evening only to realize that the was no source of light to be used in your search. To compound to it, do you remember the feeling that you used to get when you were a kid and anytime that light goes off and it comes back again, there are shouts of joy in all the neighbouring houses. These are all scenarios illustrating how beneficial light energy is to people.

Back in the olden days people use to burn bush to serve as light for their environment till the use of lamps also came into use. It was very common to see people walking around the community carrying lamps which serves to lighten their path in the night. Lightening has improved over the years with so many initiatives by different institutions but currently the type of bulbs that are in used are having an adverse effect on our society. These adverse effects started way back but it is a process which occurs in a very subtle way so it has eluded most people until recently. It has been identified that some gases are produced out of the use of these bulbs and they bring about green-house effect. Green-house effect simply means that the surface of the Earth is being warmed by gases of the sun which should have reflected totally, but due to increased carbon-dioxide production in our system, these gases are retained on the earth and this brings about increased in temperature on the earth.

CAUSES OF GREEN HOUSE GASES EMISSIONS

Certain activities such as mass bush burning, huge smokes from the exhaust of cars, test of weapons etc. and other activities that releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere increases the green-house effect which further contribute finally to global warming. Just to break it down for some non-science related viewers of mine, what I simply mean is that the above activities increases in the global temperature of the earth making it quite warmer than it normally is.
In addition, technology has advanced in several dimensions and has led to the production of sophisticated machineries which we use in our industries. The activities of these industries also contribute to the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere further compounding to the problem stated above.

CHALLENGES FACING THE POWER INDUSTRY

In as much we all appreciate the products of technology and the benefit that it provides for us all it has set the world into a path of high energy consumption. Almost everything that we use in our homes these days all consume electricity in one way or another. This has been draining major power supplies of many countries and with countries in Western parts of Africa where I am from, it is normal to go a whole week without lights because of the system of load shedding. Due to the high consumption of electricity some utility companies have decided to offer their customers the opportunity to use LEDs which consumes very low amount of energy. Not only that but also the use of LEDs are environmentally friendly in the sense that they do not emit harmful gases and also they don’t produce heat when used for very long time as compared to the other sources of light such as CFLs.

To compound to the issue of high consumption of energy, various technological industries are going into the production of self-automated vehicles and vehicles that uses electricity as a source of fuel. It is not totally bad idea if there was enough supply of energy to power humans together with all these gadgets because I am sure they have the mindset of reducing the cost of fuel that most of us are crying day in and day out about. Unfortunately, the power grid is running out and compounding to this problem with the production of electrical cars would only worsen the problem.
The combined effects of the above problems has brought about huge expenses unto the power industry through their incentive assistance to the public and also certain initiatives that they take in order to bring the consumption of power under control. If this continues, then we might as well have the power directing some of its funds which might have been budget for repairs and maintenance would be used for providing incentives for customers. This would only lead to breakdown of machines that are needed in supplying energy to our homes.

THE SOLUTION THAT TERAWATT OFFERS

The blockchain technology is being accepted and adopted by several platforms because of certain features that it possesses. The prominent features that makes the blockchain technology so admirable is the level of security that it offers to information that is entered into it. Also, the blockchain ledger is also used to organize information in a very suitable way that it makes it easy to retrieve information in the future. Again, the blockchain technology also comes with the use of smart contract which ensures the execution of payments without the use of any form of intermediary. It is based on this amazing technology that Terawatt seeks to come out with mechanisms that would help solve the challenges that the power industry faces.

Terawatt understands the essence of team work and partnership and therefore would create a platform which is a Decentralized Autonomous Organization which would serve as a control room for executing commands to supporting consumers and utility providers in their quest to curb the usage of energy and the switch to the use of LED bulbs. The Decentralized platforms would serve as platform which would collect funds from all the major stakeholders such as consumers, utility providers etc. then later these major stake holders can decide on how to use the funds collected to help in the curbing the rate at which power is consumed.

By this same decision making some funds would be allocated to provide LEDs to consumers to reduce the consumption of power and also to lessen the financial burden that used to rely on utility companies alone. Hello @Ikkelins i believe so many people do appreciate the fact that LEDs could help reduce the energy consumption that most current systems in place would provide but most of the time it all comes back to finances you know. So if this project is all about making it affordable then i guess it would be great to have it become successful.

Hi @kingboo thanks for having a look at this write up and i agree with you perfectly that financial costs has always been the issue when it comes to people adopting these sources of energy which are environmentally friendly. This project is actually geared towards reducing the cost drastically so that it becomes very affordable for the average person on the financial ladder to be able to afford it.

I wish this project could actually extend its boundaries to Africa especially Ghana you know. Energy crises has been our greatest concern and so many projects are collapsing due to this. Thanks for sharing this project.
