Tokenization of fiat currencies in public blockchains is a key question I think. The moment we have a public, fast, secure and easy-to-use network without trusted third parties is the moment we could see systemic changes. It's difficult to say which platform will win, though, and what will be the role of blockchain (in the strict sense) in the coming "internet of value". But be if the Raiden network & Casper (Ethereum), Lightning (BitCoin), Algorand, Hyperledger or central bank issued programmable money, the era of third parties will be over. But it all boils down to if monetary value -- that you can spend in a grocery store -- can/is allowed to be stored and transacted outside the existing banking infrastructure.
