you don't need to own 1000 dash to get masternode rewards. there are several trusted services you can use for as little as 25 or so coins.
in the future (Dash evo) there will be trustless interest bearing accounts as well.
Very true, I have heard a little on those, right now I have to save up to even get to the 25 needed. If I had 25 I would be getting started.
