Blockchain Riders: Tips On How To Play 'The New Game Of Steem'

in #blockchain6 years ago (edited)

Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. - Seneca

And that's only one characteristic Surf & Steem do have in common.

Probably those of us who generally enjoy leaving their comfort zones, go on adventure frequently and find pleasure in embracing the new, will have a certain edge over those who don't see any benefits in change.

Steem is a network that has been in constant motion ever since, always reinventing itself, being shaped by its participants and their vision.

Some decided to leave before the party got even started, others left and came back, while we are still here.

The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new. - Socrates

Ride the high tide.

During my today's surf session I noticed that there are actually a lot of parallels between catching waves and playing the (new) game of Steem.

Here's what you may bear in mind before starting out your next session on the blockchain.

5 tips on how to improve your Steem play:

  1. Be aware of your (energy) resources before starting out.
  2. Preparation is key, don't start out before warming up.
  3. Don't paddle into every wave, spend your mana wisely.
  4. Make sure that input and output are in balance.
  5. Learn from the best, for a reason they're at the top.

Today's witness forum on the PAL discord server organized by @aggroed was another great source of inspiration in that context.

To me one of the most valuable takeaways from the panel was a statement from Steemit Inc's Content Director Andrew Levine who said that:

The value of your activity on chain HAS to be higher than the cost in RCs. - @andrarchy

The introduction of Resource Credits are a clear statement PRO quality on Steem. We - the users of this network - will be accountable for our own doings, being responsible for the transactions we execute and the mark we leave, assuming the costs of our operations.

As long as our contribution to the blockchain has a value above the RCs required to perform it, the game may turn out quite profitable for all of us.

Just concentrate, play your game, and don't be afraid to win.

See you on the block!

Much love,
Marly -

So pleased to read a positive post about HF. It's going to be an interesting new game indeed. I don't mind change - I'm a traveller and a surfer so as you say maybe that's why - and I'm sure there's going to be more problems solved than fixed. The core crew and communities I love here are sticking around so no mass exodus in my neck of the Steemwoods. We will be fine and we will look back on this as a minor flat spell before the good swell comes in. 💚🏄‍♀️

Hehe, nicely put @riverflows!! I couldn't agree more.

Probably even most of those who're heavily complaining right now, will be staying for the good waves. It's always been like this. Some just need the rant for some unknown reason..:-) I wouldn't ever want to waste my energy in that way.

By the way, you may want to consider joining the Steem surf community on discord. If you have an account there, you can just reach out: surfermarly#8679. Nice people only :-)

Happy surfing 🤙

Oh that would be cool.. I will for sure!!!

Love it how you guys compare steemit with riding those waves 😎
@surfermarley I invited @riverflows to the channel 🤙

Following you now surf-brother! ... that is a beautiful quote - "Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet" :D

Hi Marly, hope your weekend is going well, well, it’s evidently clear to me that you’re enjoying your day considering those smiles on your face in that your picture at your local spot today.

I’m happy that the steemit mana depicts the one in the Bible; it’s always sufficient for the day! All that it requires is good management.

Much love @surfermarly. I’m @maxdevalue.

Oh I absolutely had a wonderful day, @maxdevelue! Thanks for stopping by once more :-)

I fully agree: management is everything. The fact that we're able to be rewarded for our social interaction in this network, is a gift. Nobody is forced to participate, but all are invited to do so.

Hey@surfermarly that is some cool bunch of advice for minnow like me...however have one question in particular.
Every activity includes our RC cost be it commenting, posting , editting ..how we gonna add value to it?? Is that something to do with meaningful commenting / posting ? Or getting into a healthy discussion over comments.....help me understand

Try to think about it from an investment standpoint: every transaction on the blockchain comes with a specific price tag, while every transaction you execute is theoretically able to improve your stake / position in the network.

Consider that everything you contribute to this network (curation, feedback, transfer, etc.) has value.

I'll give you an example: voting is less expensive with regards to Resource Credits (mana) than commenting, however a personal comment left on someone's content may help you to gain attention - not only the attention of the one you addressed your comment to but also other users who're participating in the same thread. Now that specific comment may be of significant value to many users at the same time, and some may even consider starting to follow your blog as a consequence. So while you effectively spent a relatively high amount of RCs on leaving a comment on a post (versus just upvoting it), the outcome for you and the network may be significantly higher.

The impact you create in the network should be higher then the price you pay for it (in RCs).

That's at least my personal interpretation. There may be many other approaches :-)

So it ultimately come back to the quality of engagement we do on here.

Considering your example..if the comment is not worthy then no one ever going to put their eye...on it however if it has more sense and quality to it ..then we will get more of reward in expanding our network .

So whatever we are investing....must put value to it....that is great advice 👍 ...it also help avoiding shit and bogus comments..if the user are more smart..they are not going to waste their RC.

Thanks you so much for helping me out 👌

@surfermarly so what are the consequences of depleting your mana over leaving thoughtful comments..... or are there none?

Late to the party of RC, :))

Think about RCs as if they were gasoline for your car.
If you drive fast, you'll probably consume more gasoline, however you may reach your goal faster. If you drive slowly, you can save gasoline, but will probably need to drive a while longer.

You need to trade off the invest (RC) for your possible return (attention, connections, upvotes, etc.).

Practical example: If you leave 10 nonsense comments nobody cares about and pay a high amout of RC for it, it's probably less contributive than leaving 3 really well elaborated statements that may help you to grow your brand.

makes sense, I guess the aim is to promote "quality" on the platform then. @surfermarly many thanks

Yes ! Change catalyses catalyses dormant Potentials to gather Momentum, develop Wings and Soar to the Heavens of Growth. Thus , there is no use fighting Change .
Rather, embrace the Golden opportunities in the NEW.

But if I am Socrates I would prefer to say:

"The Secret of Change is to focus All your Energy, not on fighting the NEW, but on building the New"

Welcome from "fork;20" @surfermarly!!

"The Secret of Change is to focus All your Energy, not on fighting the NEW, but on building the New"

Hehe, nicely put @alaisguineasis! :-)

Hello @sufermarly, very interesting what you say, really yes.
I believe that these changes in steemit should encourage even more the production of quality content.

I like the relationship that you make of steemit with life, truly, I could say in relation to changes, which are permanent, and we simply have to accept them, adapt and move forward.

Thanks for this post
good weekend.

am I the only one who feels like a puppet for the amusement of @ned and STINC? 'work hard to make communities, beth! engage!' so I do. now, 'wait, don't do it too much! learn a whole new game!'

bah.

The good thing about games is that either they have solid rules that don't change so everyone understands them and how to play, OR everyone gets to decide on new rules. This isn't a game, it's reckless ignorance couched in elite arrogance.

Thank you though, for a thoughtful and intelligent attempt at explaining a 'game' whose rules will surely change again, according to the whim of a man who would rather glorify himself playing the guitar than help the platform he is responsible for.

The good thing about games is actually that we're free to choose the ones we love :-)
As a kid my favorite game was Malefiz (also known as Barricade), do you know that?

That looks like fun. It reminds me of a game we played called 'Chinese Checkers'.

I loved to play Monopoly, mostly with my older brother. As soon as I got good enough to give him some competition, he'd change the rules. I kept trying to keep up, but what he called 'changing the rules' was actually cheating.

I love Steemit and have found people so important to me I can't even describe how much I care about them; however I can't help but feel like my asshole older brother is changing the rules on me again.

Oh, Monopoly!!! I have probably spent years playing it during my childhood :-) I remember some holidays in Norway where we had constant rain showers for a couple of days and played Monopoly from breakfeast til dinner, I loved it!!!

We all love and care about Steem/Steemit, which is why we are here :-)

I simply hope that love is reciprocal. Because it just doesn't feel that way.

You're lovely; thank you for replying and engaging. :)

I can relate to what you said @bethalea, the question in my head is, how will a platform like this go mainstream and have a huge user base?.

Has everyone forgotten about simplicity?

Monopoly changed my perspective at a young age, love that game.

Well this is a blockchain were people get rewarded for their attention (time) invested. If we want it simple, then we may stick with a network that is easy to understand but doesn't pay us for our contribution...:-)

Everybody is 100% free to choose their favorite environment. In a decentralized community everybody is accountable for their own doings which also includes assuming the costs for the blockchain transaction one executes.

Mark Zuckerberg pays for the transactions you execute on Facebook, but he also claims 100% of the sales he makes on your data :-)

With the short attention span out there.... Only time will tell

We should not leave without first trying ... This will be a new experience in Steemit, there is no reason to deny enjoying something new.

So I guess we have to figure out how much cost the RCs actually use.

I wonder how much it will cost to post this comment.

You can go check your RCs on Steem services such as this one here:

Check the info box on the left hand side (currently you have ~7 votes left e.g.).

The Steem comment sections were full of spam and looked like a big joke before HF20

Ahí me puedes hacer preguntas gratuitas jeje

perdona, pero no sé que es discordapp.com, quisiera hacerte muchas preguntas, pero no sé qué es eso. jejelee

Love this Marly, thanks for sharing this analogy and setting us off right after this hardfork! 💙💙

What a brilliant quote, and really informative post thanks. This is all new to me bit of an adjustment.

I’ve been sitting back and waiting for the HF20 dust to settle, thanks for your tips. I certainly hope these changes do make the whole Steemit experience better by rewarding genuine social interactions.

Hi @surfermarly, nice post!

I haven't been reading posts regularly on Steemit over the last ~fortnight, so it looks like I missed all the furore regarding HF20. Based on tonight's reading, especially what you've said above, it looks like the development team have had to step in to correct a problem with the trajectory of the platform based specifically on resource usage. This shouldn't really surprise anybody - software runs on computers, computers run on electricity, electricity is produced via the transformation of natural resources. It seems to me like as the platform has gained popularity, the costs of the platform have increased to the point that have forced a re-thinking of some of the concepts underpinning it. Probably, some are unhappy that their so-called 'free lunch' (which was never really 'free', only gifted) has been discontinued. Well, tough. What's more important, personal benefit, or the welfare of the platform as a whole? From what I can see, these changes won't really affect the day-to-day experience of anyone honestly using the platform in the spirit with which it was intended. I haven't read all the specific details, so I could be wrong about some (or all!) of this, but that's the impression I get.

Love your work - keep it up! 👍

Cheers,

Ryan

Great analogy which I agree with! I would go further with what has been said in that the Resource Credit inclusion will bring opportunities as it will provide developers with the proper data to ensure that value is being created with an appropriate amount of “energy” spent. As we approach more key initiatives being developed like Hivemind and Smart Media Tokens, they resources will become more important and will be the key to value creation.
