I've talked to a lot of people about how we grow the blockchain games market. And the one thing that seems to be a common thread is the fact that we are all waiting for that one killer app to enter the market. Nothing will grow the blockchain games more than having a game with a gigantic following integrate with blockchain. And thanks to a recent announcement, we might be closer than we think.
Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite, recently announced a partnership with blockchain startup, MagnaChain. There isn't a lot of info about the partnership and the specific things they plan to do. But MagnaChain is a blockchain built specifically for video games. They claim to be capable of handling up to 100,000 transactions per second. It recently launched its testnet and is handling 13,000 transactions per second.
Transaction speeds are a hot topic right now. We've painfully learned that it doesn't take much to bring Ethereum to its knees. The current architecture is extremely prohibitive, especially for those who want to build big, immersive blockchain games; Ethereum is just not built to handle it.
While Ethereum is working hard at solutions, there are other blockchains coming into the market with their own solutions. Magnachain is one of those, and they are purely focused on games.
While nothing has been revealed about the partnership, it's hard to not want to imagine what it would be like if Fortnite entered blockchain games. It's a game who's enormous revenue comes from the sales of digital assets. And digital asset ownership is one of the core strengths of blockchain. Blockchain integration would allow Epic to make additional revenue off the sale of digital assets sold on the secondary market.
Aside from the additional truck loads of money they would make, a game like Fortnite would instantly legitimize the blockchain game space and pave the way for many others. It would be nothing but a good thing for all of us. So until we know more, let's all close our eyes and imagine a wonderful future, where billions of people around the world are playing blockchain games.

I've heard good things about Fortnite, but I've never actually played the game. Is it really as fun as people say it is?
