Any initiative that makes witnesses more affordable (ie not requiring potential memory pools of 128GB+ with scalability) is an excellent proposal. This will allow more competition in the witness game, and further increase decentralisation.
It would motivate someone like myself to invest in physical hardware, and then co-locate it in a data centre, instead of the current trend of people hosting servers on leased equipment, which is ultimately not "their property".
It feels as though having all of these "decentralised" witness servers (many of which are physically located or hosted by the same providers) - presents a risk to the blockchain - what if that server provider was shut down?
I'd love to see more witnesses / full nodes in locations that are not data centres for these very reasons:
- Increased decentralisation
- Increased competition = witnesses that do stuff for STEEM
- The concept of custody and ownership makes people care about things a lot more
its a little bit more work to set it all up but was worth it in our opinion for all the reasons stated above. It helps with the whole decentralisation and as such makes steem more secure as a blockchain.
