Hello, everyone. I hope you are having a really good day.
Recently I´ve been really amazed by the meaning the word melancholy, and I´m afraid that maybe not all of us are on the same page. So here´s a little explanation that I wanted to make from a while ago:
According to Merriam Webster's Dictionary, melancholy is "depression of spirits" as well as "an abnormal state attributed to an excess of black bile and characterized by irascibility or depression."
This is the hard-true meaning that has been officially given to the word.
But if we are honest with each other, melancholy is something that a lot of us suffer at some point in our existence, and maybe, because of this, we need a new point of view to this word and make it something positive for us.
Yesterday I watched a video on YouTube from the School of Life channel that really helped me cope with this state that I´m constantly living. It stated that:
-Melancholy isn´t despair, anger or depression.
-It is a wise accommodation with griefs, large and small, of existence.
-It is a commitment to face difficulties without rage or violence.
-The melancholy person knows how tragic life can be, but greets the sadness with stoicism, courage and quiet strength.
-It is NOT an illness to be cured.
-It is the wisest way to greet the folly of the world.
-IT IS AN ACHIEVEMENT.
I think we should from now on look at this state of being as something that the wise people would do because it is perhaps the best way to look at life; not with sadness and despair or happiness and joy, but with wisdom towards all the mistakes that humanity has made and also for all the things that shouldn´t have happened to us.
