Diary of a Pizza Delivery Dude.

in #blog6 years ago

On a Sunday it can be a hot or a miss with the amount of orders you receive during a shift, some Sundays can be really busy and other Sundays you can find yourself sat in front of your mobile phone watching funny videos to pass the time.

Tonight was one of them nights that I could have sat down and watched another bull shit vidoe but something else ended up happening.

My boss decided that he wasn't going to go home tonight, he decided that he would stay in the shop and make the other staff do cleaning chores.
I am hired to do one job, and that is to make sure food gets to the customer in a timely fashion, so I could have just sat around doing nothing.

But that isn't my style, why should the other guys work hard and get paid while I just sit doing nothing.

I got some clothes and started to do what they call in the trade "deep clean".
While I was on my hands and knees cleaning wheels and under tables my friend was painting the wall, by the time we had finished the place looked like new.

I was surprised at how clean and new the shop looked just with a bit of elbow grease and a couple of hours.

I also class this as learning as well, as this is something that will need to be done in my takeaway when it opens, I do believe in the saying lead as an example and that is what I am planning on doing.

In Between cleaning I did have to go out and do some deliveries, and I met some interesting people on my rounds.

One lady had phoned her order through and spoke to the owner of the shop, the problem was he can't really speak English and it is hard to ask for what you want.

She told me at the door that she wouldn't pay me unless the order was right, I said to her what did you order, she went on to tell me, and I confirmed that is what I had brought with me.

This is getting to be more and more of a concern for me, as more and more people are telling me that they get the wrong order as whoever answers the phone can't understand what they are saying.

I have started getting a name for myself as well, people phone the shop up these days and want to speak to me, the ask for me by name and the guys in the shop tell me in the area we are "I am famous".

While I was off resting my foot after a fall, customers phoned to place and order and asked for me, and when they were told I was off they asked why?
When I returned to work and started going around the regulars I noticed that they all asked if I was alright.
I would answer "yes why?"
"we heard you had hurt your foot"

Just like that, I felt good about myself because these people asked to see how I was, you have to remember I spend about 30 seconds with them at a time as I have to move on to the next house, I am always polite just like my mum brought me up. and they care about me.
One women tipped me £3 as she wanted me to have the tip from the week when I was off.

I enjoy my job I really do, even before finding out how the people felt about me. and it is nice that they ask to see how I am.

Saying that, I do have a regular customer who comes in the shop at least 3 times a week, I didn't know this until recently but he lost his wife a year ago to cancer.
He drinks so much that he is asked to leave the pub as he can't stand or he falls over, he comes to us and we feed him and 9 times out of 10 I give him a lift home as I don't want anything bad to happen to him.

A few weeks ago he came in the shop in a bad way, he had been drink all day and wasn't able to tell us what he wanted to eat, we had to guess, but he normally has the same each time he comes into the shop.
I drove him home and that was the last I had seen of him, a week had gone by and I still hadn't seen him and I started asking his friends how he was, but again no one had seen him.

I drove to his house and knocked on the door, no answer, I felt a cold shudder as I started to think the worst.
The next day his neighbour came into the shop and I asked her if she had seen him, it turns out he had been working away, I felt so relieved that he was ok.

So it shows there is people out there who care about each other.

I just hope he stays strong and cuts his drinking before it is to late.
