The Muscadine or (Vitis rotundifolia) has been very robust and productive this year. There was a solid two months of fresh grapes at the slightest inclination within arm's reach. It's been great to have on the daily menu. They are about spent for this season but the vine showed strong signs of good things to come. I look forward to many a grape filled Summer.
There's a special satisfaction in capturing images of something sweet you are about to eat.
It's a bit of a waiting game when certain clusters look so good but aren't yet quite ripe . You want to let them go a bit longer for peak ripeness, yet are always aware of the scanning eyes and anxious mouths of other aficionados, happy to get there first.
This is just such a cluster(pictured with a bold ant posing on top of the grape like some lilliputian explorer). I had kept what I considered the plumpest, Juiciest, cluster for pictures(thankfully I snapped this one early) but the evening before my chosen day to get the last photos and eat the long awaited grapes...I came out to a stripped clump where grapes used to reside. After the initial shock I had to smile knowing that whatever got them must have enjoyed them.
A plate of fresh picked goodness waits for liberation. It's a rough job but someone has to do it.
