in #blog7 years ago

''The Parties were bigger, the pace was faster, the shows were broader, the buildings were higher, the morals were looser & the liquor was cheaper''
-F Scott Fitzgerald.

The 20s a time of prosperity & culture change , with the end of WW1 people were more optimistic as the US was on the winning side and rose with major world power. People were spending money on good & entertainment as the stock market and Economy was booming. People were buying more goods on credit, causing the country to grow in overall debt.
People began speculating on the stock markets as the values was increasing , the people through it would continue to rise.
The stock market crashed on the 29 October 1929 (known as Black Tuesday) & so started the beginning of the Great Depression.

WOMEN'S FASHION

Societies rapid movement and transformation can be seen in this decade.
1920s dresses were lighter, brighter & shorter. It was popular for most clothes to be handmade.
Evening jackets, dresses & coats were often trimmed with fur .
Cotton became less popular as the was a rapid trend towards more luxury fabrics such as rayon & silk. This including silk stockings and underwear.

The era of the flapper ‘’young women’’
She smoked, she drank (often carried a hip flask), voted, danced, cut her hair (typically a bob or shorter ‘Eton’’), wore lots of makeup, long necklaces , took risks & partied hard this was a known as a flapper.
F.Scott Fitzgerald describes the flapper as ‘’lovely ,expensive and about nineteen’’.

Popular statement elements in 1920s wardrobe include:

  • wool sweaters
  • fur coats
  • bonnets & felt hats (embellished with ribbons, buckles, feathers, silk roses)
  • custom tailored suits
  • buckle pump
  • Parisian Step in Bow Pump
  • fringe dresses

MAKEUP

Pale looking skin was trendy so women would cake on powder (almost till they resembled a corpse).
Eyebrows were over- plucked and drawn on thin towards the temples
Lipstick was applied in a way that made your lips look smaller and emphasized the cupids bow shape.
Mascara was a must and caked on, along with kohl eye shadow and eyeliner only worn mostly on the top
Rouge/blush was applied in a circular shape on the cheeks
The ‘moon manicure’ was in.

FOOD & DRINK

The food prepared for parties was extravagant just like everything else from this era.
From the illegal, yet enormous display of alcohol, to 5 star and 4 course meals.
Examples of some food of the served

Sides: fried cauliflower, walnut bread, boiled carrots & peas served around ham, stuffed celery
Main: decorative meats were very popular (Baked ham which was usually soaked overnight then rolled in breadcrumbs & liquor.
Desserts : Caramel custard, Raspberry Gateau, Rice Pudding

Popular alcoholic drinks:Corn Whiskey,Gin,Mint Julep, Bronx (popular cocktail to help mask the awful taste of homemade liquor )
p.s The alcohol prohibition from 1920-1930) you would get your liquor from speakeasies or sneaky people brewed their own.
even though this era was known for the illegal alcohol it has greatly influenced the way we drink alcohol today.
