Gradual Approach to Quitting Smoking

in #blog7 months ago

Hi David,

What is your advice for quitting smoking. I'm a heavy smoker, i want to stop but it's so difficult.

Teacher David replies.

I suggest that you start with Breathing Mindfulness Meditation and generosity.....then, gradually move towards the elimination of smoking.

Making gradual changes will be best. A drastic "cold turkey" approach does not typically work.

So if you are smoking 20 cigarettes per day, move to 18 per day and do that for 1 week or so.

Then, move to 15 per day and do that for 1 week or so.

Then gradually decrease this little by little each week or two until there is 1-2 cigarettes per day..........

Then, 1 cigarette one day and none the next.....then 1 one day and 2-3 days without. Then 1 cigarette and 5-8 days without, etc.

Taking this approach with slow gradual changes, will be wiser and the mind/body can adjust to it better. It is also a more sustainable approach.

Essentially, the unEnlightened mind does not like change. It craves/desires permanence. Therefore, with these slowly gradual changes, the mind will be more comfortable and tend to adapt to this approach better with more sustainable improvement.

Marsha replies and thanks the Teacher.

Thank you so much, cold turkey didn't work, I'm going to do this.
