In the last days, the new movie from the Star Wars franchise was launched, and as a good Star Wars fan, I found the time to watch in the movies. The previous movie was a good one, and I had many things I liked about it, character I thought were interesting and cool stories that I was hyped to know how they were going to be finished. After watching "the last Jedi", I felt that they didn't do a good job of keeping up the quality story that was presented in the previous one.
There are many things I like, and many things I didn't in this new movie, and I wanted to make a complete explanation of what were these things, but thinking closer about it, I guess a lot of people already talked about it, and my inputs are on the same line as many of other fans. That being said I will just list five of the things I didn't like. It's enough to show how I think this movie has lost its chance to make a remarkable Star Wars that could lead to an epic conclusion.
1 - Rey is not interesting
To me. There are many reasons you can like a character, and it is not an exact science, but I usually like characters that grow on me and on the movie. They start weak, have their bad moments and learn to overcome difficulties during the spam of the movie. For that reason I wasn't really invested in her character during the movie, since her character was already shown to be an overpowered warrior who could use the force like a master due to the sheer force of a Deus ex machina.
2 - Poe and Fin were useless
The characters I thought were interesting in the previous movie, that had a chemistry together, and showed some development during the last movie were really my focus on this movie. Unfortunately in this movie each one was lost in their own subplot, both of which ended up in nothing, and didn't meant much to the movie. Contrary to many other critics of the flick, I kinda liked the introduction of Rose as a companion to Fin, but it would be unnecessary if they just made Fin and Poe work together. In the end, both characters did nothing but fail, didn't work together, and were lost in useless side stories so the movie could be longer.
3 - The movie is too long and has little story
I felt like the movie was too long for the little story it had. A simple chase, where a giant fleet follows a small ship. There isn't anything special about it. Strange plot excuses are given so the giant fleet can't annihilate their prey in the first 30 min of movie, that boils down to "we have to wait for them to find a plan to fight us first". The main characters are them sent in useless sidequests just to make it worth waiting for something to happen. A strange plan of escape is devised, and as expected it does not work, and almost everyone dies, even though they celebrate as even if they won. Too simple, too long, and badly executed.
4 - There is no villain, there is no tension
In the last movie, they created an aura of mistery around Snoke, a monster man, a Zombie like dictator trying to take over the galaxy. His powers over the force are unprecedented, and his evil genius in no match to even the grandson of Darth Vader himself. A villain like this could hold the trilogy on its own, but they add two more figures to make the evil team complete, Hux and Kylo, two young leaders trying to climb the stair of power. This set up was awesome, and should be able to make the tension in the movie grow, as the rebels are taken down one by one by the First order. Unfortunately, the villains are shown in ways that undermined their potential. Hux is made joke of during the whole movie, which doesn't bring fear nor tension to anything. Kylo is thrown in a emotional quest together with Rey, which brightens his dark side, and together with the angry teenage complex took away all of the fear he cast in the previous movie. Finally, the supreme leader Snoke, the backbone of the evil guys, the unbeatable ruler, the reason we fear for the good guys, was just disposed of as if he was an useless pile of plot twists. Disappointing.
5 - That is not Luke Skywalker
The way they portray Luke Skywalker was just too off character. I didn't feel angry about it, I felt sad.
That's all. I don't feel like telling all the reasons why. It's a personal reason, and I don't feel like these should be taken as objective reasons why this movie sucks. This is a movie for the new generation, and I can see how this has influenced the choices they made for the characters and for the movie as a whole. I guess the people who liked it have their personal reasons to have liked it, it's ok and I can understand it. It's just that I never thought I would get out of the cinema so disappointed with a Star Wars movie like I did. I am not really expecting much of the next movie, I don't even wanna watch it. Movies these days are getting less interesting and watered down versions of their former selves. I guess this was the Last Star Wars story for me.
See you next time.
Humm, I see :3 However, I still want to watch the next one. Maybe, this one was bad, so next one might become "not bad". haha Vamos assistir o juntos! :) and I want to talk about it a lot again.
つぎの映画をきみと一緒に見たい :D
