I remember one of the first photos I shot back in 2010. Using a Sony Ericsson C510a phone, I took the picture of a candle. There was a limit to what we could do with them at that time. Nowadays it is very easy to get amazing photos without any effort because phones are equipped with very top-quality cameras.

Recuerdo una de las primeras fotos que hice en el 2010. Con un teléfono Sony Ericsson C510a, tomé la foto de una vela. En aquella época había un límite para lo que podíamos hacer con ellos. Hoy en día es muy fácil conseguir fotos increíbles sin ningún esfuerzo porque los teléfonos están equipados con cámaras de muy alta calidad.

However, behind every photograph, there are some elements to take into account. If we use our phone's camera in automatic mode, it will not recognize how to capture what we intend to capture.

For this, it is essential to know what we want to convey and whether it is consistent with the object to be portrayed. Why is this so? Because our phones in automatic mode will not know what we want. To compensate for the poor lighting in the photo, it will ask you to turn on the flash or modify some settings on its own.

Sin embargo, detrás de cada fotografía hay algunos elementos a tener en cuenta. Si utilizamos la cámara de nuestro teléfono en modo automático, no reconocerá cómo capturar lo que pretendemos.
Para ello, es fundamental saber qué queremos transmitir y si es coherente con el objeto a retratar. ¿Por qué es así? Porque nuestros teléfonos en modo automático no sabrán lo que queremos. Para compensar la escasa iluminación de la foto, te pedirá que enciendas el flash o va modificar algunos ajustes por su cuenta.

In this case, I'm photographing a candle flame. My style is low-key, and I also have to avoid overexposing the flames. So there are certain values I need to set to get what I want.

The first thing I did was add the macro lens to my phone and change the camera mode from auto to pro. What settings need to be changed? Shutter speed and ISO in my particular case. If the ISO is too high, the photo will be full of grain or noise. It is better to use low values to avoid this. To give it a nostalgic or vintage look, we can add grain during the photo editing process.

En este caso, estoy fotografiando la llama de una vela. Mi estilo es de clave baja, y también tengo que evitar la sobreexposición de las llamas. Así que hay ciertos valores que tengo que ajustar para conseguir lo que quiero.
Lo primero que hice fue añadir el objetivo macro a mi teléfono y cambiar el modo de la cámara de automático a profesional. ¿Qué ajustes hay que cambiar? La velocidad de obturación y el ISO en mi caso particular. Si el ISO es demasiado alto, la foto estará llena de grano o ruido. Es mejor utilizar valores bajos para evitarlo. Para darle un aspecto nostálgico o vintage, podemos añadir grano durante el proceso de edición de la foto.

A candle flame tends to move a lot, so if we want it to be in focus, a high shutter speed is ideal. This achieves two things, freezing the movement and allowing the sensor to capture just the right amount of light so as not to burn the image.

There are other settings that can be adjusted, but these are the ones that I have modified when taking these photos. I insist again, it all depends on what we want to achieve and transmit. For editing, we can use apps like Lightroom and Snapseed.

La llama de una vela tiende a moverse mucho, así que si queremos que esté enfocada, lo ideal es una velocidad de obturación alta. Con ello se consiguen dos cosas, congelar el movimiento y permitir que el sensor capture la cantidad justa de luz para no quemar la imagen.
Hay otros ajustes que se pueden hacer, pero estos son los que yo he modificado al hacer estas fotos. Vuelvo a insistir, todo depende de lo que queramos conseguir y transmitir. Para la edición, podemos utilizar apps como Lightroom y Snapseed.
