Hi there🌷
I've been working on a food Instagram account. In general, the client asked me to post about traditional foods from all over the world. So I need to read about countries and their traditional foods constantly.
I read two very interesting things today. The first one was about Eritrea, a country I hadn't heard of before, and the second one was about camel burgers. It prompted me to write a post about them here on my blog.
Eritrea is a country located in northwest Africa between Sudán, Ethiopia, and Yibuti. According to what I've read it is a country living in a difficult situation in terms of freedom of speech and health. You can read more about it by clicking here.
Eritrean cuisine is highly influenced by its African roots, its Ethiopian neighbors, and Italian cuisine. Providing a variety of flavors such as zigni, berbere, and suwa as well as lasagna, capretto, panettone, and pizza of Eritrean style.
...But the one that got my attention the most was the camel burger. That was something I was never heard of before either. I found out about it when I read this blog entry earlier this morning and couldn't help but dig a bit deeper.
"Camel meat is considered to be one of the leanest red meats available." - Travel Food Atlas
Camel burgers are not just popular in Eritrea but also in Somalia, Syria, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, and Kazakhstan. Some of the blogs I consulted before writing this post mentioned the above countries as the ones with the largest camel population.
... So that led me to another interesting fact. Digging a little bit deeper (again), I found out that the countries with the largest camel population are China, India, the United States, Indonesia, and Pakistan. While the largest herd of camels can be found in Australia. Consult this blog for further information.
With that being said, I can assure you of something: being a blogger is a one-way ticket to never-ending learning. This is what I enjoy most about it.

Interesting about Eritrea and the camel burgers! As is the incorporation of Italian cuisine in the broader food culture. Probably due to the Italian colonisation of Eritrea in the past.
So what kind of toppings do you find on Eritrean style pizza?
You know, camel burgers are also somewhat popular in Australia. You won't find them everywhere, but there is a place not far from me that sells them, along with crocodile, kangaroo and emu burgers! And also hotdogs with these meats, if I remember correctly...
It's been about least 5 years since I last went, but you've got me thinking I ought to go there again soon for something a bit different to eat 😄
