I'm from Venezuela, but the tradition is inherited from Spain, according to the story, the French and German aristocracy liked to eat grapes, something that the Spanish aristocracy assimilated, later, in New Year's Eve, the citizens of Madrid approached the Gate of the Sun square to hear bells, and mocked the customs that the aristocracy had copied from the French and Germans, over time, an excess in the harvest of grapes caused the tradition to become popular, and became a ritual to culminate the year, some countries that were colony of Spain assumed the tradition also, like Venezuela, Colombia or Mexico.
