When I went to University to study Urban Planning, I realized how many people actually do not understand what this profession is about, and actually I did not fully understand it either until I finished my first quarter. Urban Planning is a profession for creative people that want to improve people's quality of life and environment around us. Some people might think that engineers and architects can do this job, but the truth is Urban Planners are the ones that make the planning that actually works and bring architects, engineers and other professionals together to achieve the plan. I’ve seen so many streets, buildings, and parks that were designed by architects and engineers, but within some time it just doesn't work anymore and it must be redone. This is a normal thing when within some time we have to rebuild something, but if there would be a better planning there would be no need to spend so much money and pollute the environment even more.
So what Urban Planners really do?
Urban Planners deal with technical and political process that concerns with the development and use of our land, public welfare, protection of our environment, and the design of the urban environment, including water, air, transportation, communications, and distribution networks. Urban Planners write Comprehensive Plans and many other various reports. Also, Urban Planners work on planning community events that have many benefits for citizens.
Here, in this post I’d like to to talk about this profession and one type of the planning that I admire the most - Community Development through arts and celebration.
Art, traditions, culture, and street celebrations are a big part of community development and urban planning overall. The arts revitalize neighborhoods and promote economic prosperity. Participation in the arts improves physical and psychological well-being. The arts provide a catalyst for the creation of social capital and the attainment of important community goals. Our characteristics and the way we communicate with other people are shaped by cultural behaviors, such as storytelling, music, and social integration mechanisms. It is very important that our cities and towns promote art activities that help educate us about our own and others’ traditions and culture. These activities improve our interactional approach with others and they emphasize on the emergence of the community.
A city full of unique art becomes a unique place, which attracts tourism and creates a better economy. Art makes us feel alive and expands our perceptions of the world. Art makes us see value and importance in people and buildings we may have otherwise overlooked. Art is a participatory activity that creates communities' own identity, culture, and the value of working together on a local level.
Helping a community begins with an understanding of its historic, cultural, economic, and social context, which is an essential foundation for developing and building sense of place. It is very important that kids are growing up in the city where art plays an important role because art has a big impact on learning. Art improves our critical thinking and academic performance. Also, it helps lift children from disadvantaged neighborhoods and backgrounds. Artists allow a community to assess its historic, cultural, economic, and social context. Artistic and cultural activities can be used to engage the public more fully in planning practices, such as improving the built environment, plan making, reviewing development and infrastructure projects, supporting economic development, and preserving cultural heritage, and transmitting cultural values and history.

ok, thanks for letting me know. I fixed it, but to be honest I thought #steemit hashtag applies to any article since it is on steemit, but yeah it does make sense that we should actually write about steemit if we use it. ...and about #kr I used it because urban planning really applies to any city.
Thanks for changing it! We like to let the community know about some tag uses as there are others out there that will flag for simple misuse.
rules are made for a reason :)
you guys are doing a great job helping out people that are confused here and don't know much on steemit. I wouldn't want to have a flag for something like that :) especially when I did not try to abuse it.

This is a great piece! Thanks so much for sharing, and for enlightening us all on what urban planning is!
thanks :)
Great! I did not have idea about that profession, but it is so good and important on the cultural development, I really care about art value, also the mentioned before art is the cultural heritage and part of the history of any city, state, country.
yeah, a lot of people did not even hear of this profession, but now many universities such as Harvard, UCLA, and many other ones provide this major to students. I graduated with bachelor's degree in Urban and Regional Planning last year and I am very proud :)
Congratulations, you have found your way to make you part, that has a lot of value! For making a better society.
I had a roommate who was studying the same course as yours. We would make fun of him for really not doing a major professional courses and he would just ignore us. I really felt stupid for our ignorance after reading your post. Thanks
This profession wasn't really popular before until recently because now people are realizing how much it costs to remake everything. Urban Planners are more needed now and it pays a lot too :) It is a great profession that makes a difference in the world! Thank you for reading :)

I have a few Urban Planners in my social circles, and they're great to chat with about all things you might notice while walkin through a city! It's a great mix of visual arts, economy, sociology, architecture... And more :-)
that's nice. After finishing university, now, I always find something wrong about the city ... I feel like my life got more complicated lol
Haha! That's part of having a specialty... I often can't look at images/photography/art without bein critical as well - it can be tiring ;-)
This is exciting. Joined the Discord and looking forward to learning more!

This sounds really cool. I studied community development, and now I'm studying another arts and humanities degree (Creative writing & philosophy) watching communities grow is very rewarding
it is! who are you planning to become after you are finished with school?
I studied philosophy too!
Well, this time I am studying for fun more than anything (That was the plan) as it's 17 years since I started my first degree lol. However, I write fiction books now, but would love to write screenplays and non-fiction books on the philosophy of life- law of attraction mainly. So, hoping that this may give me more of a direction into those fields. The community stuff is more of a mentality now as it underpins my work in personal development. Sorry, I feel like I have given you my life story haha
Oh no, dont worry... i love to learn about other people and you gave me a better answer than i hoped. Well, then you are going into the right direction. I loved philosophy classes! Even though i am done with school I still buy philosophy books and read :)
I actually never heard before about urban planning till know and if I had the change to change my study I would definitly choose this one it sounds really cool and creative
What did you study? Or maybe.. studying right now????
Sorry late reply but I am studying International Marketing communication and event management it is nice but I can’t put much of my creative side in it
Good effort! based on your introduction to the article...
"but the truth is Urban Planners are the ones that make the planning that actually works and bring architects, engineers and other professionals together to achieve the plan."...
I'd say you still got a lot to learn a lot about the profession. In the highly political and exhaustive process of city making, every professional would claim that they are the ones who bring all others together, although often, it is interesting to investigate who made the most critical decisions.
