Do therapy is still an important support?

Nowadays many parents who have kids with ASD (autistic spectrum disorder) are still missing out on some important things that can help the development of their kids. We spend so much of our time and emphasis is given on issues and technical related therapies. It's as if we release those responsibilities to therapists and like magic, we expect the ASD kids to recover from these disorder after undergoing therapy. With today’s life challenges and stresses, there are more important things for these children such as mental support and motivation.

Therapist vs Parents

How can we create a more positive healthy environment for these kids? We have a dialogue session with therapists in one of the hospital with expertise in addressing ASD kids. What has been said is a bit sad because, many parents has taken blaming approach and there's no continuity in therapy activities that have been taught to the parents to be applied at home. In a nutshell, most parents are too busy and being ignorance when dealing with the problems of these special need children at home. The reality is, the attitude we as parents should bring to them at home plays a big part.

Sharing is Caring

The suggestions below are for influencing the children with ASD. Our behavior and their siblings, have a huge impact on their developmental growth, and one of the best ways to improve their attitude is to model the behavior we want to see in them. If we show respect, trust, patience and encouragement, we are more likely to receive them in return. What else can we do in order to influence others to make a more positive and healthy environment?

Try these 8 tips for creating a more positive environment at home!

1. Give positive reinforcement

I appreciate the way you…
I’m impressed with…
I really enjoy playing with you because…
You’re really good at…

2. Show and share your gratitude and emotion

Thank your children for something they did but weren’t expecting to get thanked for – be specific about what it was & why and take turns with them... "I am happy to see you watering the flower. You know your mom is tired after a half day at work. That was really kind of you"

3. Spread happiness

Smile to your children and appreciate them for who they are.

4. Motivate them

Post a new upbeat poster, with your children picture in it or quote on the wall where everyone in the family can see it.

5. Celebrate with them

Find some occasion to celebrate with your children or sharing something positive that is going on in your family.

6. Encourage positive thinking

Post a positive quote / picture by the fridge, or some where else where your children could see

7. Change the way you react and respond

When your children shows tantrum, observe what was the cause and tell them to relax and everything is fine instead of being offensive.. "It's OK and now, take a deep breath slowly, mama is here beside you"

8. Encourage fun and interactive learning

Do something fun and interactive together in a family... "Let's play hide and seek together"

All of the above tips also works best when your ASD child get together with their siblings and friends too! So let's get inclusive and have fun!
