The First Book About Autism Which I Fear To Read.

in #blog7 years ago (edited)

Getting a book on autism which has Malay translation is not easy for me. This is because most books on autism were easily found from abroad and through online access like an Amazon. Why I need an autism book with Malay translation, simply because for easy understanding of what exactly autism is. Eventually, my search ended when my husband has bought the book “Memahami Golongan Autisme” (original title - The Autism Acceptance Book) authored by Ellen Sabin, later translated by Institut Terjemahan & Buku Malaysia. I do not remember the year when the book was 1st purchased. When I ask him, why this book, he answered me short, “The book looks interesting with colourful illustrations for new readers like us”. I agree with him, in fact this book is suitable for young readers as early as 6 y/o too.

Fear overcome my excitement

My excitement feeling about reading and autism book suddenly turned into fear. I don’t know, why this feeling came. To overcome it, I just leave the book on the shelf. I only have guts to read its title "Memahami Golongan Autisme". Fortunately, my husband doesn't notice what I did.

Recalling my fear of reading the book is something that unintentionally. That feeling was may be due to lack of mental and emotional readiness which make me feel heartbreaking. I realised I can’t accept the reality with an open mind. Erina was still young. She looks like a normal kid because of her physical is normal. Except she has delayed in speech. Without me noticed, I’m trapped in denial mode. There are many questions played around in my head about autism, yet I'm afraid to know it.

Fear vs Patience

My husband is aware of my feelings and he advises me to be more patient and try to distract that negative feeling through readings a lot of book about autism. He admitted that he also had the same feelings like me but felt relieved after finding this very useful book.

My favourite topic

My fear now has gone. I started to flip through the pages and finally, I found my favourite topic (see page 12 & 13 from the pictures below), 'Apakah perbezaan antara setiap manusia?'. Then, I continue my reading till to the last page. In conclusion, I should give Ellen full credits because her book "Memahami Golongan Autisme" is so compact with examples and brief descriptions as well as a colourful illustration which full of activities that perfect for sharing with anyone!
