I uses imgur as well to upload my photos.
I use the site http://wri.pe to do my post making and copy and paste over.
I like to use the markdown tag for inserting pictures
I find it to be faster than the html, which is also easy

Be sure to remove the spaces. It didn't want to post this code without the spaces...
But I haven't heard of people losing their posts on Steemit much anymore. You could always go back to using the original uploader.
