Logical Fallacies

Using brain is hard. We don't have 1,000 hours to ponder every question and decision that we are faced with. So naturally our brain takes shortcuts. We need to watch out for certain shortcuts called logical fallacies. We should try to improve our critical thinking to help all aspects of our life including how we handle money and being able to argue with any family member until they call you a stubborn head and give up.

Logical Fallacies

Bad Person - I don't like you so you must be wrong

Good Person - This person is so awesome that everything they say is correct

Whataboutism - What about this other thing that I don't like? If you ever feel like you are going in circles, this might be why.

Attack of the Clones - Instead of killing the original, you kill something that looks like it

Example - Me to Kids: "You have to finish your dinner before you get ice cream." Kids to Me: "You only love me when I eat."

Whether or not I love them is independent of the rule about dinner before ice cream. In this example, the "original" is the dinner rule and the "clone" is my love for the kids. That took too long to explain, I need a better name...

No One Knows - Just because we don't have evidence of alien life, does not mean that they don't exist

Everyone Knows - Everyone knows that coffee dehydrates you

No Third Option - Either you love me or you hate me

Duck Test - If it looks, swims, and quacks like a duck, then... But seriously, people make assumptions and generalizations all the time. Often, they are useful. Sometimes they are not and we should try to challenge ourselves so we don't come to incorrect conclusions.

Two Wrongs Make a Right - Dad, I know you smoked weed when you were my age.

A Brilliant Deduction - Just because my kid ate chips before he got a nose bleed, does not mean the chips gave him the nose bleed

Blinded By the Past - If you buy Gamestop at $350 a share, realize you probably made a mistake, and now that the stock is at $200 a share, you still refuse to sell. You are too heavily invested and focused on the past but you should be more focused on what you think will happen in the future.

Fallacy of Logical Fallacies - My favorite because it keeps me grounded. Someone may have accidentally came to the correct conclusion despite using a logical fallacy. So the presence of a logical fallacy does not automatically make the conclusion false.

As you can tell, all my terms are very technical and very correct. Feel free to browse wikipedia (1) for the real definitions.
