How I became a world-class spammer in under an hour

in #blog7 years ago

The Story

This is my story of how I went from being a good guy that was making quality posts on a not so regular basis to becoming a world-class spammer in under an hour, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it happening. That’s right, I became a spammer without my will and created eight posts in 38 minutes, take that, spammers of the blockchain! Let me tell you how it all happened.

this post, I am using free services to build my website and, of course, they are not as reliable as the paid ones so anything could happen and, because I worked hard on the design of the website and I love it, I want it to be backed up in case the shit goes down.Yesterday I finished my website, it was all perfect, and it looked exactly the way I wanted it to look like. After that, I published a post through @Steempress, and everything worked just about fine so, I decided to back up my site in case anything happens. As I said yesterday in

Backing it up

With that idea in mind, I went on the holy YouTube to search for a way to download all my website’s data without using a shitty plugin and, of course, the best way of doing that is through an FTP software like FileZilla. I set it up, downloaded the content of my website and the databases, everything was fine but, I wanted to see if I could upload the data on a new site to see if it would actually work in case of something.

I had another website and domain called notguyfawkes.ml that until now I only used to test things first before applying them on my website so in case something broke, my main website guyfawkes4-20.ml would still be working. I managed to upload all the content on the new site, upload and change the credentials of the database and it worked, I managed to migrate my whole website to a new domain.

Fucking it up

Everything fine and dandy but, yes, this is that but, I decided to change the theme of the website because I don’t want to have two sites that look exactly the same, I might confuse them sometimes. Yes, that was the mistake I did, changing the theme because, when I migrated my website to the new domain, all the plugins were still active, including Steempress which was fully set up with my username and posting key, ready to publish posts on the blockchain.

I knew that the plugins were active but I didn’t fully realize it, nor was I thinking that a new theme comes with new “lorem ipsum” test posts which happened. So, after changing the theme, twice, guess what, the posts started to get published on the blockchain.

I had no idea that it was happening until @RivalzZz hit me up on Discord to point out the fact that I am publishing “lorem ipsum” posts. That’s when I had one of those profound moments when you realize that you fucked up bad.

Fixing it up

At that time, only three posts got published on the blockchain, so I didn’t panic much; I logged into my WordPress test website, deleted all the posts and uninstalled the Steempress plugin.

I thought everything was over but, the plugin considered all the posts that came with the theme new posts and probably added them to a posting queue and published them one by one on the blockchain, even if the plugin was uninstalled. Ok, at that point I was like, fuck me, what is going on? So, I deleted the whole website but, of course, it didn’t work, posts kept on getting published.

In the end, I changed my Steem password, which I should’ve done from the beginning and reached out to @howo to kill the plugin from the inside, so I am 100% sure that nothing else gets posted. But, by that time, eight posts already got published on the blockchain, and there was nothing I could do to delete them.

The End

And, this is my story about how I became a world-class spammer and made eight meaningless posts on the blockchain in 38 minutes. But, let’s look at the bright side, at least I finally had the opportunity to flag myself which is something that I always wanted to do.

Now, I can’t do anything about those shitposts but, one thing I can surely do is to spam the blockchain with quality posts to make up for all the ones from yesterday so, Steemians, be prepared for my, hopefully, daily quality posts.

And, don’t forget to deactivate the Steempress plugin while you’re working on your website and, if you ever get to spam the blockchain by mistake, make sure to flag your posts, it’s super fun. :D

nahh, come on :P
Thanks for the Update ;-) a funny title. i Guess we all apologize it ;)

Hehe, nice one brother. :))

It was a fun experience, not so bad after all.

It was interesting headline so I decided to read your story and see what is it about, @guyfawkes4-20! I was feeling compassion for you the whole time but at some places I found your story quite funny! I hope this doesn’t go on the wrong way and that you understand precisely what I mean! I find your language culture and your writing style quite light and easy to accept by the audience and this is so rare nowadays - I believe that those two are a must have for a good blogger! With such style and approach to all the readers it won’t be a struggle for you to keep up with quality work for those spam posts! Greetings!

Of course, I totally get what you mean. In fact, that's the way I tried to design the post, with a small hint of humor. I'm trying to have a simpler approach to writing but, maybe that's due to the fact that I don't really consider myself a writer but more a person that shares ideas through writing, or maybe because English is not my native language. I do hope you are right; thanks a lot for your comment. :)

Thank you, kind sir. lol

Flagging one's post is thug life! I hope i get the chance to feel like a cool badass too 😎

Edited : I will advice you lock down your username in .com, in case your idea explodes. But i am guess it will still be around for a while.

Hehe, yeah, it's a fun thing to do. Yeah, I might do something like that in the future, .com is always the best option.

Love your work man! Reading this put a smile on my face & gave me a chuckle :) I have done something similar but not on a public blockchain, hehe.

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the post, cheers man. ;)
