Caffeine and Stomachache

in #blog6 years ago

Your chance of experiencing unpleasant side effects from caffeine increases in direct proportion to the amount you consume. A moderate amount of caffeine, or approximately 100 to 200 mg a day, is unlikely to trigger adverse reactions in most people. This amount is the equivalent to about one or two cups of coffee or approximately three to five cans of soda a day. Consuming more than 500 to 600 mg of caffeine a day increases the risks of side effects. One of the potential negative side effects of caffeine is a stomachache.

STOMACHACHES AND CAFFEINE

Most people do not experience a stomachache from caffeine unless they consume large amounts, but some people may experience this effect even with relatively small amounts. Although the specific time frame may vary depending on a number of factors, stomachaches that are caused by caffeine consumption may occur within 30 to 60 minutes after consumption and may last up to 14 hours, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

CONSIDERATIONS

Although caffeine may trigger stomachaches in some people, a stomachache may have nothing to do with caffeine at all. A bowel blockage or obstruction, kidney stones, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, urinary tract infections, lactose intolerance, food allergies, food poisoning and certain viruses are just some of the many things that may cause abdominal pain. Avoiding caffeine completely may help you determine if your stomachache is being caused by caffeine or another condition.

OTHER EFFECTS OF CAFFEINE

Caffeine may cause a stomachache, but it also may cause several other effects as well. Some of these effects are desirable, such as increasing alertness, improving mood, boosting cognitive performance and providing a quick burst of energy. Other effects may be not as pleasant, such as headaches, increased sweating, jitteriness, anxiety, irritability, increased blood pressure, muscle tremors and insomnia. In addition, you may experience unpleasant withdrawal effects when you stop consuming caffeine, especially if you regularly consumed large quantities of the substance. Possible withdrawal effects of caffeine include irritability, low energy levels, fatigue and headaches.

WARNING

While mild stomach pain can be treated at home, seek immediate medical attention if your stomach ache is accompanied by chest, neck or shoulder pain or if your belly is rigid or tender to touch. Also seek emergency medical attention if you are vomiting blood, unable to pass stool, have difficulty breathing or if you have sudden, sharp pain. Even if your stomach pain is mild, call a doctor if the pain does not improve within one to two days.
