Vintage Political Joke

This one from East Germany immediately after WW 2,

After the Nazi defeat, a military parade is held on Red Square. Stalin, feeling particularly pleased with himself, goes down to ingratiate the soldiers with his presence. He falls on three who participated in the Fall of Berlin and starts asking them a few questions.

“Comrade, what did you think of Germany?” he asks the first one.

“Ah, Germany was a golden country. There was damage from the war, yes, but everything else was so clean and civilized.”

Stalin’s mustache twitches and he calls over Beria. “This one,” he says, “Send him to a Siberian camp. Make sure he’s working in a gold mine!”

Grumbling, he turns to the second soldier and asks him the same question.

“Germany was splendid! So much culture! Beethoven, Schiller, Goethe...”

Another sign to Beria, and the soldier is sent straight to a mine in the Caucasus where he will never hear a bird sing.

Sighing, Stalin turns to the last soldier. “And you, Comrade, what did you think of Germany?”

“It’s a horrible place! A terrible land! Everything was awful!”

“Finally!” says Stalin, “A soldier with the right ideology! You have pleased me, and I want to give you a reward. Tell me what you want and I’ll make it so!”

“Oh, if that’s the case… can I go back to Germany…?”
