Quick, how do you shoot in the fog???

in #blog6 years ago (edited)

I was so excited I almost yelled my question at poor Cathy, who was still in her housecoat and slippers. It's 7 AM and I've just been outside and seen beautiful, luscious looking fog... It was still completely dark. In my own defence, I should mention that I was the one who got up early as usual and made the coffee. I'm not a monster!

The ever patient Cathy is reading me stuff from her iPad...

Over-expose one stop. Focus on something in the foreground. Use manual focus because the camera may struggle in low light. Did I mention full darkness? We're going to test my little Olympus em5ii, most specifically the image stabilization. These will be long exposure, hand-held shots. I'm using a Nikon 24mm f/2.8 lens with an adapter.

One-third of a second, hand-held. I fired off a bunch of shots thinking they would be blurry, but they mostly looked like this. The scene is illuminated only by a streetlamp.

Cathy is just as camera-crazy as I am, and she was totally up for a walk around the block. I kept going over her list. Overexpose. Check. Focus on something in the foreground. Check.

It was getting brighter now. The exposure compensation button on this camera is way too easy to nudge by mistake. I had to correct my exposure with each shot. The fog does look better if you shoot at +1 stop, roughly speaking.

For me though, the real magic happened before it got light. My favourite shot was one of the very first, taken at the end of my driveway... One-third of a second, no tripod!

One thing, however... Do you want to talk about the election? Me neither! (It's a civic election day today) Twenty seconds in photoshop and that orange election sign is gone, and here's my final image.

I enjoyed looking at your foggy photos.

Thank you very much! It's very foggy today, more than in these shots :)

I like those images! Like somewhere in the movie!

Thank you, I appreciate the comment!

Thanks for that lesson, and for sharing some beautiful images.

You're welcome, just passing along what Cathy looked up for me. It did work better than other attempts I had made... I find it helps to have just a couple of tips to keep in mind.

Tell kathy she's got fog down to science. Last shot is a killer. Fog and clouds. My favorite.
