Herbal Healing Ointment
We have been using this recipe for the last few years and love everything about it. It is wonderful because it helps to fight infections, all while speeding up the skins natural ability to heal itself. I also have sold it locally to friends and at famer's markets, with amazing feedback as well. In fact I have someone who orders it in bulk because they give it credit for healing their psoriasis, when nothing else worked. With that being said, I am not a doctor and therefore cannot give medical advice or guarantee results… I can just give you my humble opinion based on our own personal experience. Which is, stop buying the antibiotic ointment (like Neosporin), and make this instead... I promise you won’t regret it! Let’s get started…
The Herbs
- Comfrey – Has been used since ancient times for topical healing purposes, and has even been known to help heal fractured bones. It has amazing anti inflammatory properties and the ability to increase cell production, which speeds up the overall healing time of the wound.
- Plantain – Is full of anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and cell regenerating properties. It is known to help heal common skin ailments as well as reduce the effects of insect bites all while soothing skin, making it the perfect addition to this recipe.
- Calendula – Is such a versatile herb known for its ability to heal skin while being gentle as well. It has been known to help soothe the effects of eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. While speeding up healing time of minor cuts, scrapes and bites due to its ability to increase blood flow and speeding up the overall healing time. It also has antioxidant properties that help protect the skin while it’s anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties ward of infection. This is definitely an herb everyone should have in their medicine cabinet at all times!
- Yarrow – Is a very valuable medicinal herb with its astringent, antiseptic, antispasmodic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Yarrow is famous for its wound healing properties, and has been used throughout history to cleanse wounds and to help control bleeding.
- Lavender – Known for its ability to calm and soothe irritated skin, but it is also contains anti-septic properties to help fight germs while reducing the appearance of scars.
We will be infusing these herbs into an organic virgin olive oil and then adding it into the recipe below. There are two options for infusing the oil with herbs, the hot or the cold method. The cold method is what I use personally and consists of placing 2 Tbsp of each herb into a jar and filling the jar with oil. Then store in a cool dark place for 2 weeks. For the sake of time though, the hot method consists of placing that jar now filled with herbs and oil into a saucepan of water over low heat for 1hr, then letting the mixture set a room temperature for a few hours before using.
The Recipe
- 2 oz. Herbal Infused Olive Oil
- ½ oz. Unrefined Coconut Oil
- ½ oz. Raw Shea Butter
- ½ oz. Beeswax
- 1 ½ tsp. Bentonite Clay
- 2 drops each of Organic Tea Tree and Lavender Essential Oils (optional)
The Process
Making this ointment is very quick and easy and requires no expensive equipment, just a saucepan and a good ole Mason jar.
The first thing we need to do is just add our Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Herbal Infused Oil, and Beeswax into our jar. If you do not have shea butter on hand you can just replace it with additional coconut oil, which is readily available.
Then place it into a saucepan of water over medium low heat until melted.
Next, remove from heat and add in the Bentonite Clay, stirring to combine using a non metal utensil.
If you will be adding essential oils, do that now…stirring to combine.
Finally, we just pour it into a container of your choosing. I have these on hand because it is what I sell the ointment in locally, but a recycled container or small jar would work just as well.
And there you have it, your own homemade Herbal Healing Ointment. To use; simply apply to minor injuries as needed, just like you would a store bought antibiotic ointment...except without the questionable ingredients and high price tag that comes along with it.
I hope you enjoy this as much as we do!
Thank you for reading,
Happy Homesteading

love it! what a gorgeous post for an excellent recipe. last fall was my first time making a salve (with our own beeswax and comfrey!) and i got some calendula this year as i really want to try that in there too (heard so many good things). this post truly makes me even more excited :)!!
Awe thank you so much!! Man, I think you guys are going to love this...it’s great for dry hands that have been gardening all day too. Calendula is seriously one of my favorite herbs, it’s good for so many things. Thank you for all the support ❤️❤️❤️
I knew there was going to be comfrey in there! I'm bookmarking this for later when I have more time. It looks like a great recipe with well thought out herb mixture.
Thank you! I can’t imagine a first aid recipe without comfrey haha! It’s just so good. We actually tested the ability to help heal fractured bones last year (unfortunately) and I have to say I was really impressed. The injury healed up quickly and saved ourselves a trip to the doctor. It will always have a place in my garden. Thank you so much!
You know I hurt my wrist at work recently (I think it is a tendon). What do you think the best way to apply comfrey to that would be?
I would make a poultice by just soaking the comfrey in warm water and then wrapping it in gauze then applying it to your wrist. Almost making a little tea bag from it. We then wrapped the area in more gauze and a wrap to hold it all together. We did that for a few hours on and off throughout the day and then a fresh one at night. It worked great for us. I hope you heal quickly @canadianrenegade
I have dried comfrey leaves and those empty tea bag. I think I will give this a try. Thank You!
Amazing. My German Nana always used to make a calendula cream but I never asked her how and then she passed. Im definately going to.do this... thanks for sharing. Xx
Oh my goodness, calendula is one of my favorites. I actually add it to my lotion recipes as well, it is so great for skin in general... it even has some anti aging properties as well. This is so simple to make and I really think you will love it! Thank you ❤️
I´m looking forward to collect new lavender this year, excellent post as always.

This is a brilliant share. I am fond and always believe in natural herbal treatment because they are so effective yet very mild, and so close to our nature. Thank you so much for sharing this. Such a gem!
You’re so welcome and thank you for the kind words. I agree, I have found most of what we need to be happy and healthy can be found in nature 🌸
I'll get some clay, and try this. I have everything else, after I crack a hive anyway.
Yes please do and let me know what you think! Thank you!
This is a really good post. I can smell and feel already your cream on my skin. The whole process of creating it looks so healthy. Think only of the Pharma industry, one of the biggest polluters on earth.
Thank you! Yes I think making things ourselves is the best way to beat them.
this is a great tutorial so glad you shared it, got all those herbs growing near me so will definitely give it a go, really nicely presented resteemed so more people can see it xx

I chopped off my finger cutting ingredients for a death metal stew. Will it work on that?
Oh my goodness I just died 🤣... you might need a bit more than ointment for that injury dear!
I love your posts Kylie, you always come up with really interesting ideas!
I have a dedicated time for reading blogs before I go to sleep and yours, for sure, is in my list every day.
I just can't understand when in history we stopped sharing natural medicines to start buying it. I can remember my grandmas, they always had some herb for healing something.
One thing that I've started using a lot is turmeric + black pepper, it's a great anti-inflamatory, plus all the other benefits.
your posts are way too soothing:P
Haha thank you ❤️
I love the way you go to such detail giving people all the information they need to be able to make their own! Obviously, I've added this to the next issue of Sotall Directory Update. Keep up the GREAT work!
