More or less, I learned how to read tarot cards in one afternoon.
From that experience, I developed a method for learning the cards in 30 minutes or less.
You think there’s a catch, don’t you? It’s actually pretty easy.
It was 1999 when I acquired my first tarot deck. Quickly I went to a gathering with many of my friends who were all too happy to line up and be my guinea pigs.
I think I did about 12 readings that day. After around the third reading, I put away the little book then maybe pulled it out a couple of times during the remainder of the readings.
Over and over again, the querent gave me positive feedback and was just as surprised as I was that all the readings were so accurate. From that experience, I developed this easy method of learning the cards quickly.
Forget trying to memorize each and every card.
That’s not the way to go, at least it’s not the way to begin.
Never have I seen a situation where these 7 steps do not work.
In the past, I taught tarot classes for many years where, among endless other things, I taught this technique to overwhelmed noobs. It usually requires less than 30 minutes.
Once you learn this easy method you can teach your friends.
Okay, well, the truth is, this technique actually shows you that you already know the cards,
you already know the symbols and pictographs. It’s stored in your subconscious.
Love’s 30 Minute or Less Technique for Learning to Read the Tarot Cards:
(1) Find someone who will be your guinea pig. If a friend or family member is not around then do a public figure.
(2) For your first time, I suggest you just do a general reading instead of asking a question. Begin with a simple 3 card; past, present, future spread. Take a deep breath, quiet your spirit. Shuffle the cards for about 3 minutes while keeping the mouth and mind quiet.
(3) When you feel finished shuffling (trust yourself and know when to stop) place the top card, face-up, in the middle. The next card is placed to the right then place the third card to the left of the middle card. The cards are in the order of Past, Present, Future.
(4) Here we go! This is the fun part. Begin with the middle card. Don’t think about it. Just open your mouth and just start saying what you see and what it means to you, what it brings to mind for you. Trust yourself and say whatever comes to mind. Start by saying,
“What I see in this card, state the name of the card, is … If all you can do is describe what you see on the card then begin describing.
This process will get your subconscious drawn in and open you up to information. Don’t question what you get in your head! Just say it. You will be surprised.
(5) Look at your querent. Notice this person is already shaking their head, “yes”. By now you are getting positive feedback. On the rare occasion that you do not, don’t worry just go on to the next card, the “Past”. Do the same thing again as you did with “Present”. Then go on to Future.
(6) Now that you have looked at all 3 cards it’s very possible that there is an obvious story or fluidity to the cards that you can use to conclude.
(7) Listen to feedback from your querent. You will be surprised that, more than likely, they loved the reading and was very helpful. Try it and let me know how it worked out.
HELPFUL TIPS:
- It's impossible to pull the wrong card.
- There's no wrong or right way to use the tarot cards.
- Don't worry about reversed cards for now. We will cover it in another lesson.
Now that you see what a badass you are, it’s time to integrate card study.
Blending book knowledge with self-knowledge and intuition is not only the road to learning the tarot but an infinite journey of self-empowerment.
My next tarot post will give you the basics for developing your own self-paced tarot study program for easily understanding the big picture of the cards. Once you get that, it’s all gravy, or salsa, or warm chocolate topping with nuts...whoops...what happened there? I need a snack.
