The Great Wave: Price Revolutions and the Rhythm of History is by far one of my favorites. It looks at inflation from the middle ages forward, catalysts for monetary system collapse and how everything was rebuild and eventually broken all over again.
The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World is without a doubt my second favorite. In fact is was so well received PBS did an entire series which you can check out on Youtube. It's like 4 hours long if you'd rather not read.
