We're building something here ...
I've just been having a bit of a reflective morning and looking over some of the cool stuff we've made this year and one of the biggest, and in some ways unexpected successes is our podcasts.
Seven months ago we launched our short story podcast, The Other Stories | Sci-Fi, Horror, Thriller, WTF Stories. A podcast designed to give me and the guys at H&C a way of regularly creating new stories and getting them out to an audience.
The show's since gone on to be one of our favourite things we do.
Nearly 150k downloads, regular contact with fans from all over the world, and a great way to try out themes and ideas and develop ourselves as storytellers.
And then a couple of months ago we launched our second podcast, The Story Studio | Self-Publishing, Independent Art, and the Future of Storytelling. We wanted to talk to all these cool people all around the world independently publishing stories and doing a damn fine job of it too. We figured if we're interested in this topic then other people might be too.
It's been a pretty sweet way of talking shop with people I've always wanted to talk to.
So then I got thinking about what comes next?
I definitely want to keep this ball rolling. I would love to do another fiction podcast. But instead of jumping in and out of various short story worlds, it would be great to do a longer sequential story. It seems like that would be the logical next step.
If I had to attribute any modest success we've had with these shows I'd account it to the following three things.
- WORKING IN A TEAM
- CONSISTENTLY PUBLISHING EVERY WEEK AT THE SAME TIME
- ENJOYING THE CRAZINESS OF IT ALL
Because it is crazy. Things go wrong all the time. Audio doesn't work. Schedules don't line up. So you need a team to help you wrangle all of the crazy. And you need to present it as consistently as possible to your listeners. They don't want the crazy. They only want to listen to your the beautiful little sausage that comes out of the crazy. Or as I like to call it ... the art.

IDEA 130: A Seth Rogan film. Of course.
Seth is playing a more insular and shy version of himself. Suddenly his hand comes to life and talks to him in the voice of a sensual sexy female. She says she's his fairy godmother and she's here to guide him in his quest for love.
So she gives him advice throughout the day, talking through the hand-mouth, but also take control of the hand and makes him hold hands with girls, touch them and tickle them. She pulls him out of his insular shell and forces him to grow up and be flirty and whatnot.
So in the end, this girl he THOUGHT he liked, turns out not to be the one, and he ends up falling in love with his own hand. They go on to decide to be together and Seth goes back to his life to spend his days making love to his own hand.
Profits made from this blog will go right into my ramen fund. Any more will go right into any future storytelling projects.
