Mindgames: Gun Control

in #blog7 years ago

I made a quick video about an overlooked perspective in the gun control debate (available here:

) that is short and mostly to the point. My thesis is this: gun control will not only make us less safe by introducing non-identifiable threats, but improvised weaponry can actually do more harm than their regulated counterparts. I think we can all agree that mental stability plays a large role in this debate. Mentally unstable people can and will find ways to meet their twisted goals. There are a thousand ways to kill, and guns are only one way. The majority of gun owners in this country are law abiding, stable people. They enjoy being able to shoot, hunt, and defend their families from any dangers that may arise. Not only that, but gun manufacturers account for a sizable portion of our economy. i would like to take a look at some of the ramifications gun control could have on our overall safety and possible economic impact.

Everyone knows what a gun looks like, right? Every shoot em up flick has them on prominent display. But how would we as a society be able to recognize or react to something that may not look like a threat? Welcome to the world of improvised weapons. If you have doubts about this subject, simply google "homemade weapons" and open the images page. Believe it or not, millions of people take an avid interest in alternative weaponry. These weapons are already out there, but they are rarely seen or used. The dangers we face because of these weapons are enormous. Along with improvised weapons comes improvised ammunition that could be anything from glass to various metal pieces. In fact, getting hit by an improvised gun may not be that different from getting hit by a hand grenade. They can be far more deadly to the user and victim alike. Before rushing to judgment on on this subject, please consider the alternatives. Personally, I think the current system of gun manufacturing and regulation is a positive thing. It surely keeps many of these type of weapons locked away in garages and basements across the country and relegates them to neat oddities. gun control could bring these barbaric weapons into the open and cause the type of damage to be anything unlike we have seen before. The economic impact of implementing gun control would be great as well. Millions of good paying jobs would be lost, sending many hard working American families into financial hardship. At a time when employment is tenuous, it could have an outsized impact on the American economy. These companies pay also pay a generous portion in various taxes to local, state, and federal governments. Could this country really afford such a large chuck of money to suddenly evaporate from government budgets? I would venture to guess that the taxpayers nationwide would have to fill that gap with higher taxes at a time when most can barely make ends meet. I understand the pain of losing people to shootings. I have had friends who have been shot and killed. I don't want to be construed as unsympathetic to the issue of losing loved ones to senseless violence. But, we already have laws against murder. We have laws against drunk driving. Yet millions of people every year break them. Laws are only as good as people that follow them. Simply passing a law to feel good isn't the answer. It could very well bring unintended consequences that we as a society are not ready to face.
