This is a series of Money Hacks to help to make extra money by creating habits in your life. Previously I'd touch on a few of these Money Hacks but wanted to go more in-depth and didn't want to produce a 10,000-word monster article for you to read.
This series will only be completed when I run out of ideas to share so make sure you bookmark this site.
The Costco Marketing Strategy
I was in Costco the other day and was reminded of the 'Don't Shop Hungry' money hack when I approached the checkouts.
You see, just beyond the checkouts is the Costco Canteen, where you can load up with some reasonable priced food and drinks after a long shopping spree.
And it's not just the bulk buying, super sized shopping carts and warehouse prices, that encourage shoppers to buy more, but also the positioning of the canteen after the checkouts is key to the Costco Marketing Strategy.
That's right, by positioning the canteen after the checkouts, Costco ensures you're kept hungry until you're finished loading up the trolley.
It's a smart marketing ploy, but savvy shoppers already know how to combat this tactic.
Don't Shop Hungry
When you shop hungry, you're likely to buy more food to satisfy your immediate hunger rather than loading up with products you intended to buy before you left the house.
Always, eat before you shop and it'll be a lot easier to stay the course, and just buy what's on your shopping list.
And when you find yourself shopping at Costco next time, just head straight for the checkouts, then bypass the queue and make a beeline to the canteen, and grab a bite to eat and drink at the Costco Canteen.
There aren't any rules to say you can't eat first and you'll likely fill your trolley with the stuff you need when you shop on a full stomach. Plus, the drinks have free re-fills so keep your cup while you shop and grab a top-up and some desert on the way out.
Oh, and if there isn't anything you fancy in the canteen, just pick-up a hot chicken in-store, grab a seat and chow down on that. It's another way to save a little extra money, and you can always finish the chicken off later at home.
You may look a little strange among the super sized pizza and hot dog eaters, but I bet the people watching you are wondering why they didn't see the chicken on the specials board.
