Since Cozumel is relatively small, we had planned ahead and booked a guided tour to maximize our experience. Though I had been to Mexico before, I was immediately struck by how different Cozumel felt—it didn’t look like the mainland at all. Instead, it reminded me of home in Puerto Rico, with its laid-back Caribbean island vibes.
Discovering the Mayan Ruins
Our first stop was the Mayan Ruins, where we got a fascinating history lesson. I had always associated the Mayan civilization with mainland Mexico and Central America, so I was surprised to learn that Mayan culture is still alive and well in Cozumel today. Walking among the ruins and learning about their advanced society, astronomy, and traditions gave us a deeper appreciation for the island’s history.
A Visit to the Bee Sanctuary
Next, we visited a Bee Sanctuary, which turned out to be one of the most interesting stops of the day. We often hear about how important bees are to the environment, but this experience truly opened our eyes to just how crucial they are. We learned about different species of bees, their role in pollination, and how they contribute to producing honey, vanilla extract, and even peppers! We even got to taste different types of honey, which was a fun and flavorful experience.
Ending with Ocean Views and Local Flavors
To wrap up our adventure, we headed to the coast for a well-deserved break. We sat down with nachos and mojitos, enjoying the ocean breeze and the stunning views. There’s something about fresh Mexican food by the beach that makes everything taste even better!
Before heading back to the ship, we made a quick stop at the port for some shopping. Though we didn’t spend too much time browsing, it was nice to pick up a few souvenirs to remember our time in Cozumel.

Overall, Cozumel was an amazing first destination for our cruise. It offered the perfect blend of history, culture, and relaxation, setting the tone for the rest of our adventure. With just one stop down, we were already excited to see what the next destinations had in store!
