The Cry of Dolores

in #blog7 years ago

Hi! Today I wanna talk about one of Mexico's most important celebrations, as well as my personal favorite: Independence Day. It's kind of like a two-day celebration filled with tradition, parades, fireworks, music, and food!

A little bit of history

According to history, the event that triggered the Mexican War of Independence was the famous Grito de Dolores. This is how we call the manner in which Miguel Hidalgo urged the Mexican people to rise up against the Spanish-born ruling class at the time. This happened in the town of Dolores Hidalgo in the state of Guanajuato on September 16th around midnight. Hence, the official Independence Day is September 16th, but the celebration really begins on the night of the 15th at 11 pm.

Tradition

People gather together in town squares all over the country each year on September 15th to witness a dramatization of the call to arms in which the president, governor or mayor impersonates Miguel Hidalgo, who is known as the "Father of Independence". It is a moment filled with emotion. Can you imagine the entire population of the country shouting "Viva México!" in unison? Well, it's something like that.

Of course, all of this wouldn't be complete without music, dance, traditional food, and tequila!
