It is evening now and it's been quiet outside for a couple of hours.
The worst of the storm was at the end of the morning and the beginning of the afternoon. I left you with a wobbly wooden crate outside! I posted the blog and then grabbed my things to move over to my boyfriend's dad's house. I just didn't trust things inside the cabin enough anymore.
Taking good care of the door, I went outside and walked over to the door of the house. Once I hit the last few steps in the open wind, I had to actually do my best not to be blown off my feet! I quickly unlocked the door and went inside. There, I settled down on the couch with a blanket and I mostly checked news posts about the storm.
I told you the trains stopped riding alltogether. Many trees had fallen and the trails just weren't clean enough I guess. The airport in Amsterdam also delayed all flights for a while, whereas they had first planned to just cancel the European flights.
The first real images were of plenty of trucks that fell over and blocked many roads. More pictures came in of trees that fell down and of garden furniture migrating to other gardens. Then, little clips came in of dixie toilets sliding down the street and rooftops flying off!
There was also a video of people falling down and actually being blown away!
Crazy, right? Atleast it is for the Netherlands.
After a while, my boyfriend's dad came home to find me on his couch and told me he had planned to call me to say I could hide out there, so it was good I made that decision. He had to get back to work, but wanted to see if everything was still standing.
This is what happened to the wobbly wooden crate:
Luckily, it didn't damage anything so our windows are still intact. One of the name signs of our cabin neighbours (the furniture maker) had been broken too, so that's now lying outside of our home aswell. Besides that, everything's still standing here.
I had told my boyfriend I'd rather have him stay inside for the lunch, instead of the usual lunch break walk. Luckily, he listened and was safe at work during the worst of the storm.
Three people died in the Netherlands due to falling trees and branches. There ofcourse is also loads of damages. Bad storm for our little country, but it's over now.
Let's end on a good note and see how a fellow Dutchy keeps thinking positive:

Wow!! That video of the roof coming off is frightening enough. I hope those people weren't in their apartments when that happened. :-(
Yeah, me too! It's pretty crazy...
We watched everything happen from Belgium ! Strength to the everybody affected by the storm.
Greets from Ghent
Thanks @komia! Was the weather a bit calmer in Belgium?
Much calmer yes. We had bad weather, but the winds you guys experienced, we did not have.
Happy to hear that :D
It was quite crazy today. Public transport was disastrous.
Crazy indeed! I feel for everyone who was stuck in public transport yesterday. They can't help it ofcourse, but it's annoying either way.
Glad to see you are safe. I saw the news reports and videos of people being blown over.
We too are having crazy stormy weather. One storm after another, and extensive rainy season...instead of distinct seasons, it seems like it's just one long wet and extremely windy season.
Great post.
Thank you! Yeah, the weather is crazy. So much wind, it's very annoying :-(
Whoa, sounds pretty intense. I'm glad you're safe and sound and that the worst is over. I was reading about some of the cold and storms going on in Russia and stuff. The weather is crazy these days. And over here, after all the cold we had, temperatures went back up to -5 and -10 or closer to 0. When it's so cold that you find -10 warm...lol
We had a lot of snow too over the weekend. Not huge storm, but driving conditions were poor. The kids' activities were cancelled, both the ringuette hockey and the choir. We stayed home and Frank shoveled with the kids to clear the car and the path to the driveway.
It's January, so I guess we can expect Winter weather to be mroe prominent lol it only makes sense, but still, it could be a bit less windy and bit less cold IMO.
Yeaah, winter brings beauty with snow, but then it gets annoying when it's hard to get around. I completely agree, I could do without so much wind and cold :D
Yeah. I was out today after 12 and the public transport was the worst.
I can imagine! I feel bad for the people struggling to get home with public transport today. Ofcourse there's not much they could have done about this before-hand. I do wonder how many people have been whining about public transport messing up again ;-)
Oh it was the worst, hehe. No trams, metros or trains - buses only.
And not really, no. Just staying home was the only option, which in most cases isn't an option.
It's sad that staying home wouldn't be an option on such dangerous days. Many jobs can be done from home if need be and some could do with less employees. I don't like how everything's still about work on such days. Companies should take better care of their people.
Some did advice their employees to stay home though. This needs to become the norm I think.
OMG, that roof. Amazing how strong the wind was.
We had luck here in Germany. Nothing really strongly damaged.
Take care.
Yes, that is pretty crazy, right? We don't have that happening a lot here luckily.
Happy to hear it wasn't too crazy over there. Though I did read a few people lost their life due to the storm in Germany yesterday too :-(
Awful.
I saw only the neighbour's garden fence went down. Not that serious. Have a nice weekend.
Thank you, hope you have a nice weekend too :-)
i heard the noise last night on the roof of our hotel, it was PURE HOWLING. that poor person getting blown along! hope they were ok!
Yeah I hope so too! There was quite some howling indeed, pretty scary stuff!
Wow, I saw that clip of the roof coming off somewhere earlier, but it had no context at all. That's a pretty serious storm!
Yes, luckily we don't have those often.
Oh.. I had an order which was supposed to fly from an airport in Netherlands. I just read that the flight was cancelled and I was thinking "Oh come on, don't cancel the flights for small wind".
Now this looks really something!
Haha, yeah I think they weren't exaggerating there :D
I was watching the trees from my window, it was crazy. And heard the ambulance screaming the whole day. Glad it's over!
Oh yes, I'm sure they were pretty busy yesterday! Did everything go okay for you?
very horror turns out the storm there, natural disasters cannot be predicted in
similar to a storm in indonesia
The sad thing is that this weather was predicted a couple of days before. Predictions got more accurate the closer to today and still people head out onto the road and such. All about work, no care for safety :-(
that's my friend, life dynamics may have the path of each.
After the event they've thought of salvation.
follow me my friend
You are most welcome.
Wow, this is intense. Glad to know you are OK:)
Were there any casualties?
Yeah, the news spoke of three casualties in the Netherlands.
That's too bad.
But I must say, given the intensity of this windstorm, it could easily have been far worse.
I grew up in the steppes (prairies) of the southern Russia and we had some pretty scary windstorms there once in awhile too.
Hey, great video and post ! I upvoted you , and I will probably go on with upvoting!
Would you follow and upvote me too ! It does not cost you someting !
