Spoilers ahead.
Seriously, spoilers ahead! Go see the movie first, then come back and read (and comment) about it.
Infinity Gauntlet: The Comic
I was in sixth or seventh grade when the Infinity Gauntlet mini series came out. The story was amazing: Thanos, having collected six gems that give him access to the unlimited power of the six aspects of creation, kills off 1/3 of the universe's population as a gift to Lady Death, a cosmic being representing all death in the universe. Meanwhile, Adam Warlock, Silver Surfer and Dr Strange work to assemble all the earth's heroes in an (futile) attempt to wrestle the gauntlet from him.
They fail. Spectacularly. We see Wolverine's adamantium claws turn into noodles, Cyclop's head get encased in a block of an ultrahard mineral, and Captain America's shield is disintegrated by a punch from Thanos. And it was all a ruse-an attempt to distract Thanos enough that Silver Surfer can swoop in and snag the Gauntlet.
He fails too. (Although What If #49 shows us how that would have played out)
Infinity War: The Film
The storyline of the movie is similar to the comic series. Thanos is collecting the Infinity Stones. In the movie, however, we find out his ambition to do so is to wipe out half the population of the universe, so that those left behind won't have to deal with scarce resources...a problem that led his own homeworld, Titan, to ruin eons ago. He is a complex villain voiced marvelously by Josh Brolin.
The movie begins showing us how powerful Thanos is with the newly acquired Power Stone. He goes toe to toe with the Hulk, and wins by a wide margin. In a subtle nod to the comic, Hulk is transported and crashes through Dr Strange's mansion, with the same comment Silver Surfer made in the comics: "Thanos is coming!"
Thanos has a lot of moving parts to deal with, however, so he sends his extremely capable minions to get the two gems held on earth (Time and Mind, held by Dr Strange and Vision respectively). This moves the plot forward and gives the good guys some time to gather together, while Thanos is off seeking the Soul and Reality Stones.
As expected, the film ends with Thanos collecting the last of the Stones and attaining unlimited power. This climaxes with him killing half the universe, including a healthy dose of your favorite heroes. It was a total blast sitting in a full theater and hearing the gasps of people as we watched beloved characters disintegrate.
Another spoiler: there's no way Marvel killed them off for real. But we're left with that impression, as well as wondering, "how will they kill Thanos and get the Gauntlet?"
We'll just have to wait until next year to find out.
What did you like or dislike about it?

I finally saw Infinity War, which means I finally get to read your post in its entirety and comment on it. Sorry it took so long. :)
I read the Infinity Guantlet series a few months ago to familiarize myself with what could be happening in the movie, knowing that things would not go exactly as it did (that would be way too practical :). It's been my main gripe with any comic book movie adapting some well known story arc outside of the MCU.
For me, the X-Men have largely missed with their attempts, and so has the Fantastic Four and the original Hulk movie. The first two Spider-Man movies were pretty good. The rest, until Homecoming, weren't up to par.
Inside the MCU, however, they've done some pretty smart updating of the characters, and I don't mind it because it is in keeping with the original intent while fixing it within their own universe and more with today's times.
That said, I think Thanos as a more complicated villain is fine. The issues he's raised about running out of resources are good ones to have and to try to do something about, outside of genocide, mass sterilization or other drastic measures that go against the will of the people, of course.
And while I'm not one of those folks who feels we need to manage the population or necessarily go bankrupt turning to alternate energy resources, I can understand the problem, particularly in countries where overcrowding is an issue. And we've already seen forms of what Thanos has carried out through limiting the amount of children, wars, which ultimately end up being at the very least an unintended form of population control, and other means.
So, I get Thanos, and his reason for wiping out half the universe is much better than the reason for doing it in the comic book series, where he says he's doing it to please Lady Death, when it's more because he's insane with power.
All that said, while you may have heard gasps from the audience as far as who died, I found it very interesting that none of the original Avengers were among them—it was nearly every phase two and phase three superheroes instead. The ones who have one and at most two movies under their belts, rather than three of their own, plus two Avengers movies (leading to this), plus whatever crossing over they may have done already (such as Civil War, which was essentially an Avengers movie).
Plot-wise, it's an interesting choice, and not one I would have gone with. I probably would have taken out some of the Avengers and some of the others, maybe leaving the least likely mix of superheroes to try to figure things out.
The problem is, I know how the comic book ends. I also know where the movie is likely to go, and it's based less on what would be good for the characters or the story lines as it has to do with actors, budgets and so forth. Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. have both talked about not renewing contracts once their done, and so my guess is, they will die somehow saving everyone else. The rest of the folks will be left to soldier on.
So, what they've done, in essence, is delay the inevitable for one last movie. :) Which is fine. I'd rather not see Steve Rogers or Tony Stark die just yet. But I probably would of had one of them die now to live later and maybe have them retire into the sunset somehow, leaving them to make cameos here and there later on. :)
Dang, Glen, this is a blog post in itself!
Good thoughts all around and I agree with pretty much everything you said.
Yeah. I only realized how much I'd written until after I went back to re-read and edit. :) Doesn't happen like that very often, I must say. I guess I really liked the topic. :)
Of course, I waited a month to be able to leave something, too, so hopefully something of worth came out.
I'm glad you told us how it ended, my mamma used to do that all the time to us. You just brought back a very happy memory. Thank you. 👍
Unfortunately I have not watched this movie yet. I hope that this is something super. But I saw all the films making this one. I, honestly a little disappointed with the second part of most of them. Thor, the second part of this film was very difficult to see, missed. Guardians of the galaxy - 2 parts, plays the first part of the film ten times. Iron man ... the series just got mixed up. The man is an ant .. I think that acting could be better. Spiderman, new, I do not see this boy in this role. Magnificent four in the new version, just wasting my time. I do not understand why they do not make films for works ........ for example Harry Harrison? A rat of stainless steel, a moralist, an irreplaceable planet .... This is not a comic book in which you can shove everything you want. There are no films from Asprin's books .. it would be just super movies, there's a lot of sparkling humor. Remember the old film "Inner space", about a reduced bathyscaphe in the body of a loser. I watched it a hundred times and I'll look a hundred times more.
